I am testing canvas by creating a free account. I have set up a profile but cannot find any way or information about creating a unique subdomain so I can see the content i am creating. How do you do this seemingly basic and simple task?

Welcome and thank you for posting on the Instructure Community!
Free for Teacher does not provide you with the ability to create a unique domain for your canvas site. This feature is only available to paid accounts, and is actually something that Instructure sets up for you when they set up your school's instance.
That being said, to share your course with others, you need to take the URL of your canvas course that includes the ID (i.e. canvas.instructure.com/courses/1234 (1234 is your course ID)). You can also provide users with a registration URL which is provided to you via your course settings once you enable it and refresh your page.
Hope this information helps!
