Hello everyone,
I just recently join the Free For Teacher Canvas User and I would like to give it a try. I am currently holding a large number of classes of two high school grade levels, grades 8 and 10, 13 sections for each level, and a maximum of 40 to a minimum of 38 students per class.
I am looking for a platform that would lessen my admin tasks (paper work) and would help make much more of my classroom teacher-student time.
I have a question about foreign names and how I can transfer the scores recorded in Canvas to an Excel file where names are arranged according to the school originally created by the school.
My students are Thai and I do not know how to read their Thai names so I encouraged them to enter their student numbers when they signed up. Now most of the students entered their Thai names (in Thai characters) so my question is:
1. How do I guide my students to change their Thai names to their Student Number on their profile? I hope Canvas will also have that option to enter student numbers for regions where it's not possible to record foreign names or foreign characters and writing symbols.
2. Is it possible to transfer (export) scores from Canvas to the Excel file the school has originally made?
Thank you for your kind response and guidance.

Hi @TZTZ82722 ,
Welcome to Free for Teacher!
I am happy to say that both of your questions can be resolved easily.
When it comes to having your students edit their details, they can do this by clicking on the 'Account' button on their global navigation menu (the gray / red sidebar on the left side of the screen) and clicking 'Profile'. They can edit their name, profile picture and also add a title. I recommend having them enter their ID in the title field, unless you're going to use the student ID numbers to help you with identifying students in the gradebook or things like that. In that case, you'd want them to set their number as their name.
For importing grades, you can do this, as long as the file you are attempting to import is a .csv file. I'll provide a link to a guide with some additional information here: How do I import grades in the Gradebook?
You can also export grades from the gradebook, too. How do I export grades in the Gradebook?
Please come back with any additional questions, we're happy to help!

Thank you so much for your kind reply and the recommended steps you've provided. I will ask the students to do this when they come back from their semestral break. I will keep you posted.
Hello, I would like to follow-up on this. Thank you for really taking the time to answer my questions. This week is a busy week as the second term for the academic year has started. We tried changing the names of my students in class, from their Thai names to their student number, but changes won't show in the "people" section even after students saved the necessary changes. I have attached a screenshot below for your reference.
Thank you so much.
Also because most of my students are in grades 8 (high school level 2) and grades 10 (high school level 4) they're still minor and most of them are not used to having a personal email. It is quiet a challenge for them to use a personal email. Is there an alternative for students to use like a student number only instead of them having to verify their email. Kahoot does this without a problem, students simply enter a PIN and I asked students to use their student number instead of their Thai names as Thai names are written in foreign characters. It's way efficient to download the Excel file and track students scores without them being required to constantly login with an email.
Hi @TZTZ82722 ,
Are they entering the student ID as their name, or under their "title" or "biography"? You may have to actually click on the name to view the number, depending on how the students added it.
I also wanted to let you know that I edited your message with the file attached since it contained confidential information which shouldn't be shared in a public forum. However, thank you for providing me with that visual!
