Gradebook History Unavailable in Merged Course

I have two Canvas courses that I have merged into one.  The gradebook history is not available at all - I get a message saying "The gradebook history page is not currently available for a course of this size."  I don't remember having any problems with the gradebook history in previous merged courses.  Is this a new thing?  There are only 48 students in the merged course.  I checked with my Canvas Admins and they haven't seen it before - has anyone else here run into this?

 @debra_mansperge ​, your best course of action is to get Canvas Support involved in unraveling this. The Canvas Guide on cross-listing sections (or two courses that represent sections) (How do I cross-list a section in a course?) is clear on this point:

Cross-listing should be done while courses are unpublished. Coursework is retained with the course, not with the section enrollments, so if a published course is cross-listed, all cross-listed enrollments will lose any associated assignment submissions and grades.

The Canvas Gradebook can currently support a total of 2000 grade changes (per How do I use grading history in the Gradebook?), a number that is relatively easy to reach in a course with 48 students (50 graded assignments/quizzes will do it). Without knowing the number of assignments your courses have, it's hard to say if the error message you're getting is because your newly-merged gradebooks now exceed that number, or if the error is being thrown simply because active courses have been cross-listed and grade history has been lost. Again, Canvas Support can help you sort this out.

I did cross-list the courses when they were unpublished.  I'll check with Canvas Support.  Thanks!

That's what I get for assuming,  @debra_mansperge ​. Smiley Happy  In that case, disregard the last part of my speculation, and let's see what Canvas Support has to say!

Apparently, I don't have option of contacting Canvas support directly through my instance of Canvas.  I will go back through my admins and ask them to submit the issue.

Stefani, can you point me in the right direction to find out more about the 2000 changes? I am getting the same error with out having a merged grade book. Does a change mean only grades being altered in the actual grade book or does speed grader counts as well?

 @andrew_starnes ​, there are two good ways to get clarity on that question: (1) Post a comment in the comments section of the guide (How do I use grading history in the Gradebook?); (2) Submit a help ticket to Canvas Support asking that question. I don't know for sure, but I think a "grade change" simply means any entry, regardless of how it is made, in the Gradebook--in which case yes, SpeedGrader would count as well, because the grades entered there populate the Gradebook.


I'm sorry you're having the same problem.  I am curious to know if you have imported grades into your gradebook from a csv file.  This is the first semester that I have used the import function and I'm wondering if that has something to do with the error.  I haven't heard back from my campus support, but I'll be sure to update here when I do.

I wanted to follow up and see how things ended up with your merged courses and the gradebook? Were your admins able to get Canvas Support for you?
