Looks like this idea may be in product radar purgatory. I still maintain that it would be super helpful to have a default comment feature to go with default grade.

Thanks Renee, we operate so frequently out of speed grader it helps to be able to have similar comment feature that works like the default grade feature. Thanks again for the reminder!

Hi everyone, is there a data limit on how many entries can be made in the faculty journal?

Very helpful! We use an embed for quizlet flashcards for vocab purposes. I like finding new ways to deliver material to students, thanks.

Hi folks, we also use google docs embedded into our courses for just about every assignment. We like the functionality of these google docs because it allows you to update one master doc and it can update in every course. This is helpful when you have multiple courses being taught under one umbrella. The update in one google doc shows up in all courses since it is an embed. We have the same issue with a link inside of the embedded document. Some sites will display in the canvas window by enabling mixed media content. However, if it happens to be a link to another google doc it will not work unless you right click to open in a new tab. I also have not found a way to tell a google doc to open a target in a new window. The only fix I have made is to go below the embedded document and type "If the activity link in the assignment above does not load properly, click HERE". Then I go to file upload and link the document to "HERE" so the student has a back up. Not idea, but he best band aid we could think of.

Thanks for your feedback! For me this feature would save me time for providing feedback for assignments that were actually submitted. Here is my current scenario; When a due date passes in my course I enter the grade of zero in speed grader and add a comment like "This assignment was due on 10/25, however the cut off date is not until 10/29 at midnight. Please submit this assignment by the cut off date for a chance to earn full credit". If I had the set default comment feature, I could put that statement for every student who did not submit the assignment by the due date. This would allow more of my time to give constructive feedback to struggling students. I have also found a comment of this nature to be especially helpful in situations where you have different late work policies. When you get to speed grader you see that the assignment was due and available until a certain date by having a comment of this nature. While you are grading you can see the date it was due and take of points accordingly for a late submission. - You usually see the due date under the assignment name, however if you have assigned something to a specific section you do not see the due date in speed grader under the assignment name (at least that is our experience in our instance). I agree with you 100% about the balance between faculty being engaged in their course versus automation. We are also trying to figure out how to provide teachers with the most constructive features that allows them to use their time in the most productive manor. Hopefully we can get enough votes!

Stefani, can you point me in the right direction to find out more about the 2000 changes? I am getting the same error with out having a merged grade book. Does a change mean only grades being altered in the actual grade book or does speed grader counts as well?

Xavier, has there been any follow up to a print option for the Analytics page. Right now I have to take a screen shot of each page of the analytics report then print each screen shot.

This is a great idea. I would use it for sure. It would be great if you could select certain students instead of just messaging certain student who did or did not submit. Check out a similar comment idea here - " modifiedtitle="true" title="Default Comment It is similar in the sense that you would be able to assign a default comment from the grade book. If a student has their notifications set for "notify me right away" they would get an email with the default comment that was left by the teacher. This would be most often used when entering zeros as a default grade. The default comment would say something like "Please submit by the deadline for a chance to earn credit".

Thank you for your help. Do you have any advice on how to get my request more accessible. The only issue I have with this process is that I suspect the average teacher using Canvas is not constantly searching the forums to vote on feature requests and ideas. Is there a better way to build an audience.

Thank you, that would be a short term solution. However, that message does not make it easy for the student to look at their grades page and see all of the comments left by a teacher. This is also an issue when teachers have their observations. In my district, an admin would want to be able to look and see that you have given feedback for all grades, even if they are zeros. The messages are not tied to the course, only the student. Does that make sense? This would fall under feature idea/request correct?

Thank you, the feature idea you linked me to is only specific to speed grader. I am talking about the grade book it self. It currently allows you to enter a default grade that could make all the blanks zeros (or what ever value you enter). I am asking if it's possible to have the same feature to set a default comment in the gradebook that would go along with the grades I just set as default. If I wish to leave a comment on those grades, I now have to go back through speed grader to leave the comment.

When I use the grade book I like to enter zeros for work not submitted by using the "set default grade" feature. It would be very beneficial if there were also a "Set Default Comment" feature that operated in the same way. Currently I have to go back into speed grader to leave a comment. That defeats the purpose of the "Set Default Grade" feature for me. I would just enter the grade and comment at the same time in Speed Grader.
