New Quizzes: Ideas to enhance usage for math classes

  • A type of question that allows students to type in an equation and automatically get marked correct/incorrect based on the accuracy of the equation. Similar to MathXL.
  • Include more in the equation editor such as segment/line/ray accents etc. Similar to Microsoft equation editor.
  • Include equation editor in current question types such as fill in the blank, matching, and categorization.
    • Fill in the blank: equation editor cannot currently be used in the statement or the answers.
    • Matching: equation editor cannot be used in the question/answer pairs. Pictures cannot be used either and would be beneficial for certain math questions such as matching graphs to equations.
    • Categorization: equation editor cannot currently be used for the category names or answers for them.
  • A type of question where students can graph and automatically get marked based on the accuracy of their line. Similar to MathXL.
  • Include fractions in numeric question type.

The current New Quizzes is very limiting for math teachers who would like to be able to assess their students using more than multiple choice questions, whole number or decimal numeric answers, or having the students use the essay feature to type in an equation but then having to grade those by hand anyway. Many teachers would be more likely to use Canvas for assessments if these features got added and I hope you consider doing so.

Thank you for sharing all this feedback about New Quizzes, @knharris . A few thoughts:

  • Idea Conversations is where our members suggest singular ideas for consideration. We're not move an idea forward that contains multiple suggestions in one request. Please read through How do I create a new idea conversation in the Canvas Community? for guidance on how to write a new idea.
  • Many of the ideas you've suggested are already the topic of conversation in this forum. A search for "New Quizzes" will reveal them, so please add your ratings and comments to the ones that you find in your search.
  • Last, the product manager for New Quizzes has been actively engaging with our members as we continue to iterate on the tool. I hope you'll follow Susan Sorensen and her blog posts in the Product Blog. Sue introduced herself to the community in this now-locked blog post, and set forth the likely development timeline here. You can navigate to Sue's profile page to follow her interactions on New Quizzes.

Thanks!

I 100% agree.  The new quizzes should include an Equation Editor, to allow us to include mixed numbers and complex fractions.  This is very limiting for math teachers.

@EdithBirnbaum  Thanks for your comment. This idea is archived, and we've just locked so that existing threads don't branch off further. Please search the Idea Conversations forum for existing ideas for an equation editor in New Quizzes; many ideas that require the Equation Editor will be fulfilled once  New Quizzes - RCE to match Canvas, currently in the In Development stage, is deployed to production.
