Impact

A monitor becomes a legacy monitor once it no longer gathers data or is no longer valid. This can happen due to feature updates, feature changes, or new functionalities replacing current ones in Canvas LMS. To differentiate between legacy and functioning monitors, the tool category “Legacy Monitors” is assigned to the monitor as well as to the respective context.

Ongoing maintenance of OOTB monitors

As part of regular content updates, some Out-of-the-Box (OOTB) Impact monitors and reporting templates require ongoing maintenance, such as creating, deleting, or replacing monitors. To ensure that your Impact Dashboard provides the most accurate and up-to-date tool adoption data, every quarter, the Impact Content Team checks the OOTB reporting templates and monitors.

Obsolete Reporting Templates

As part of our quarterly maintenance, updates can also be made to Reporting Templates. These updates may involve marking certain monitors or monitor categories legacy, restructuring monitor categories within existing reports, and removing or replacing outdated templates. The goal is to keep the impact Dashboard streamlined and ensure that all key monitors are accurately categorized for better clarity and usability.

Legacy Monitors

When a monitor stops gathering data, it is added to the tool category entitled, Legacy Monitors. To locate OOTB legacy monitors and tool adoption data, the Legacy Monitors tool category must be toggled to Visible and the legacy monitors will then show separately as part of your Impact Adoption Insights.

  1. Specifically for legacy monitors, the following changes will happen on a regular basis throughout the year based on Canvas updates and also as part of the quarterly maintenance with the aim of keeping your data visualizations and overall Impact Dashboard clean, clear, and up-to-date:

Monitors that stop gathering data for less than two years will be added to the dedicated Legacy Monitors category within the related Instructor, Student, Observer, and Integrated Tools Reporting Templates as shown below.

  2. Legacy monitors that have not been gathering data for more than two years will be permanently deleted from Impact.

Notifications regarding deletion

The Impact Content Team will provide notification one month prior to deletion of legacy monitors (that have stopped gathering data for longer than two years) specifying which monitors will be removed and if/how they may be replaced with new monitors. This notification will be threefold:

  • A note will be placed in the recurring release notes systray message placed on the Campaigns page
  • A separate systray message will be placed on the Impact Insights page
  • The Impact Content Release Notes page

For more information regarding managing and preserving monitors, check out the guide in Community.

Important Note: If you are interested in preserving the historical adoption data for your institution for legacy monitors, we strongly recommend exporting any legacy data prior to its removal from the Impact Dashboard as shown in the screenshot below.
