Build on Last Attempt does not retain all responses for essay questions when Backtracking is disabled

This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 5/28/25.

Description

When you have a New Quiz with One Question At A Time enabled and backtracking NOT allowed, Build on Last Attempt feature will not restore all question responses for Essay questions.

Expected Behavior

For users to be able to have all of their essay responses accessible and editable in Build on Last attempt quizzes with backtracking disabled.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Pre-req: Have a course with at least one student enrollment

1. Create a New Quiz with a few essay questions

2. Enable “One question at a time” and disallow for backtracking

3. Allow multiple attempts and Build on Last Attempt

4. Take the quiz as a student

5. Put an answer in for every essay question

6. Submit the attempt

7. See in your submission view that you have answers on all the essay questions

8. Refresh the page or go back to the quiz.

9. Begin your attempt again.

10. Observe that not all essay responses are available.
