[OPEN] Google Translate can overwrite native text with translated text unexpectedly
Engineers are currently investigating the issue.
Description
When users are using the Google Translate tool in a course, if they edit and save an item (such as a module or assignment) while translate is on, it will overwrite the original text with the translated text.
Expected Behavior
Canvas should not save translated text from Google Translate when editing items with that enabled. Google Translate should be treated as a text preview only, and we shouldn’t accept those translations (which isn’t actual user input) as changes when editing an item containing text.
Workaround
No workaround exists at this time.
Steps to Reproduce
-
Create a Canvas course and set it’s language to something other than your browser’s default language (if your default language is English, set the course to something else such as Spanish or kreyòl).
-
In that course, create a module or assignment and give it a title in that language.
-
After saving that, use the Google Translate tool to then translate the course to your browser default language.
-
Wit Google Translate still enabled, edit the item you previously created and save it (either make a minor change or no change at all).
-
Now disable the Google Translate tool. Notice that the translated version of the text in that item has saved, overwriting the original language of the page.
