Users created by JIT provisioning do not receive an email confirmation email

Canvas

This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 6/05/24.

Description

When a user is created by JIT provisioning, their emails are not auto-confirmed and they do not receive a confirmation email automatically. So these users emails will not be confirmed unless they manually send their confirmation email themselfs, which can cause confusion for users.

Expected Behavior

This could work either of two ways:

  • Their emails could be auto-confirmed or

  • A confirmation email is sent as soon as their profile is created, so they can confirm their emails from there.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisites: A canvas instance that is using a 3rd party authentication that is also setup to use JIT Provisioning and provision users emails.

  1. In the instance, setup JIT provisioning so it recognizes emails from the Provider.

  2. As a new, unregistered user, navigate to the instances 3rd party login and attempt to login and create an account.

  3. Once your account is created, navigate to the User settings page and notice your email is not confirmed, also notice no email confirmation email was initially sent once the account was created.
