Canvas FastTrack Ep. 4 - Calendar

The Canvas FastTrack Video series is a collection of quick videos aligning Canvas with Dr. Puentedura’s SAMR Model of Technology Integration.  This model has been used by many institutions as a framework for infusing technology into teaching and learning activities.  In the video collection we will dive into the various tools in Canvas and how they align with the SAMR Model of Technology.  Watch this four-minute video introduction to SAMR if you aren’t already familiar with the model.

Episode 4 is a 2 1/2 minute video about how and why utilizing the Canvas Calendar is a direct substitution for technology integration.  In this video we will share a few hidden secrets and great ways to quickly update important information for your students.

I wish we could import events from Google calendar into a Canvas course calendar.

drimmer@bromsgrove-school.co.uk‌, I could not agree more.  I can add my Canvas calendar to my Google Calendar.  Reciprocity would be amazing, especially when we are a Google district!

lstark@instructure.com‌, this is a great video, though it underscores a disconnect between Calendar, Modules, and the Syllabus tool's auto-generated list. 

There is a persistent need for options on the Syllabus tool. https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/4584?sr=search&searchId=04b2bc98-de22-4f82-9195-b596ebd128b2&s... for numerous design and student navigation reasons, that have been belabored elsewhere. 

  • I have offered support in courses where "Events" remained forgotten for semesters/years after the date presumably because they were not present anywhere visible in the course itself. (Faculty either don't know what to do with them or forget.)
  • I have also seen new instructors innocently delete assignments from their calendar, not knowing they were removing course content and submitted student work. (Urgent because confused new faculty-users will try to manage courses from the Calendar tool without first developing a mental map of their courses or Canvas functionality in general.)
  • In training Instructional Designers and faculty, I like to emphasize that Modules has the potential to be the "one" location where all of the content a student is meant to encounter can be visible. If Calendar events could somehow be made visible in modules, that training tidbit would be more consistent and true.
