Summary
Canvas Course requirements are updated with additional enhancements:
- Issuer-level Access Management: Admin can control Canvas access at the issuer level. Rather than applying access to the entire organization, they can specify which issuer groups have access to particular Canvas instances and accounts.
- Optional Completion Date: Issuers can set an optional completion date for a Canvas Course requirement. If a date is set, the requirement cannot be marked complete before that date, even if the learner meets the academic criteria early. If no date is set, the requirement completes automatically once the learner meets the progress criteria.
- Improved Trigger Descriptions: Requirement configurations include clear explanations of each trigger type. For module-based triggers, all modules must be completed, and modules without requirements are automatically considered complete. For percentage-based triggers, completion is determined by the final grade in the Canvas gradebook.
Change Benefit
This update gives organizations greater flexibility and control. Access can be granted only to the issuer groups that need it, issuers can determine when a requirement is officially completed rather than automatically awarding progress, and clearer trigger logic reduces confusion, ensuring requirements are interpreted consistently across programs.
Feature Workflow
Pathway Settings Manage Button
In Organization Content Settings, click the Allow Issuers To See Canvas Instances and Accounts of the Organization checkbox [1]. Then, click the Manage button [2].
Canvas Access Settings Modal
In the Manage modal, choose whether all issuers or specific issuers can access the available instances.
Select Issuers
If access is limited, assign specific issuer groups using the same method as when selecting instances and accounts.
Canvas Access Settings Submit Button
Then click the Submit button.
Note: Admins must save the Organization Settings to apply changes to issuer access.
Edit Pathway Requirement Modal
As an instructor, after selecting a pathway step and adding a requirement with a Canvas course: choose the instance and account if prompted, then select the Trigger type [1]. You can also optionally set a completion date [2].
Additional Details
- If no Credentials group exists for the linked course, one is created automatically when the requirement is added.
- The completion date only delays recognition; it does not change Canvas grades or course evaluation rules.
- Completion behavior varies by trigger type and is displayed in the edit tray for clarity.
- This enhancement lays the groundwork for future updates supporting assignment-level and module-level requirements.
