We appreciate the feedback and dialogue from the Canvas community concerning the addition of the AI writing detection indicator to the familiar Turnitin Similarity Report, launching this week. I want to take the opportunity to provide this community with information about our decision making process.

We - as a civilization - are in uncharted territory. The power of generative AI is at every person’s fingertips, including students. I use the word “power” deliberately. We are all learning the limits of this power, its impact, and how to harness it for new learning opportunities. A Customer Advisory Board of educators told us what they need. Their number one ask was that they needed visibility into when and how AI writing is being used in student works. They also said that they needed it now – not next summer, not next fall.  Their intention is to use AI Writing input as just another data point in the instructional process.

While OpenAI’s ChatGPT put GPT and LLMs into the zeitgeist on November 30, 2022, our AI Innovation Lab has been researching and working on a detection model for the past 2.5 years, back to when GPT-3 was initially released, and we’ve been talking with educators about this for that entire time. This technology is not brand new for us. Because teachers told us what they needed, we urged our teams to bring a solution to market as soon as possible. Of paramount importance, however, was that whatever we released met not only our standards for quality and safety but their standards. Educators set the benchmark standards.

During January and February, we conducted intensive interviews with over 20 educators and users specifically about the design of an AI writing detection user experience – one that was clear and informative. They said that we needed to NOT disrupt educators’ current similarity workflows and score; AI writing information needed to be reported separately, especially since it is new and educators are learning how to interpret the information. They also clearly specified that the use of AI writing is not necessarily a bad thing; many educators are incorporating it into their courses in creative ways. The user experience needs to focus on providing information to educators, not passing judgements on the results. Finally, we heard from administrators that we needed to provide as much in-app guidance and resources as possible to help teach and support the educators.

In closing, we agree with the Canvas community that AI writing is a fast-moving topic and an unprecedented situation. We recognize the education community’s pressing challenges, including their immediate need to know when and where AI and AI writing tools have been used by students. Our approach has been to deliver a solution quickly, with high confidence (98% based on data that was collected and verified in our AI Innovation lab), and provide transparency on how it works so educators can make informed decisions. We will iterate on our solution as we receive feedback from our customers, including those in the Canvas community.

We invite you to check out and share the following resources to learn more about our solution and continue to follow our progress:

Sincerely,

Annie Chechitelli, Chief Product Officer, Turnitin
