Students are complaining that the "warnings" that they only have so much time left on quizzes is very nerve wracking. For example when they have a 40 minute exam, after 10 minutes, they receive a "you have 30 minutes left on this exam" then after 20 minutes "you have 20 minutes left on this exam". Is there a way to avoid these warnings?

I came here to ask this same question. The 30-minute warning doesn't make sense. A 10-minute warning makes sense. A 30-minute warning? Strange. The problem isn't the timer. The kids need the timer, so hiding it won't work. The pop-up at 30 minutes is creating anxiety.
It is now June 2024, and the issue of students failing to finish questions, upload files and prepare for submission before the quiz time ends remains a significant problem. This is especially critical for courses using Canvas Quizzes with online proctoring services to meet accreditation requirements. Students missing the end of the exam time limit leads to unsubmitted responses and impacts their grades.
To address this, I have posted a feature idea today called: "Enable Convenor-Defined Reminder Notifications/Warnings for Students About Upcoming Quiz End Time" (see link below). This feature aims to allow convenors to define and set reminder notifications in both New and Classic Quizzes. These reminders will alert all students as the quiz end time approaches, prompting them to begin the submission process. I believe this solution will address the urgent need for a more flexible and user-defined reminder system, which many of us have been seeking to resolve this issue.
Great suggestion Danielle!
I think it would also help enormously if the timer moved down the screen with the student, so they could keep sight of it while working on longer answers.
