I am a new Canvas administrator for our district. The following issue was posed to me:

As an admin, I have reviewed the Sync settings. The only setting the user did not have turned on was the nightly sync. Is there something else I am missing that would help with importing assignment groups to a course?

I am also an admin in the same position, just passed the 24 hours mark.
I just received this information from instructure:
PowerSchool through OneRoster requires that the primary teacher enrollment be active. Once that enrollment starts in PowerSchool teachers will be able to sync their assignment categories.
My name is Mariah and I'm working with the Canvas SIS Integrations team. I understand that you had some questions about how to sync your PowerSchool Assignment Categories to Canvas.
PowerSchool has updated their system this year so the process has changed. First, you need to set up and view their SIS Assignment Categories in the PowerTeacher Pro gradebook for each section of their course. Assignment Categories remain inactive in PowerTeacher Pro gradebook until viewed.
Next in Canvas, you will need to create Assignment Groups matching the SIS Assignment Categories. Once the Assignment Groups are created, click the three dots next to +Assignments and Sync SIS Categories. A list of the assignment groups will appear. This will allow you to associate the Assignments Groups to the PowerTeacher Assignments Categories. Once they are associated you can Sync the Categories.

I have tried this but there is not choice except unassociated. How do I get the categories to appear so that I can associate them?

I have tried changing course Participation from term to course and that did not solve the problem? I have changed the course start date and that did not solve the problem? I have changed the course term and am waiting to see if the nightly sync will do anything to solve the problem.
I am not sure if you have gotten an answer, but we have had the same issue at my school. What my teachers had to do was recreate the assignment groups in Canvas (the ones that correspond with PowerSchool), and then sync categories worked.
