Enabling Smart Search for just a few courses?

Through initial investigations, and after talking with a Canvas rep, it appears that Smart Search can't be enabled at the course level. Also, if it is enabled at the admin level, it will automatically be visible in the navigation pane of all courses. How can I set the default visibility value to false, so that we can have the option to manually enable in only the courses we choose? At this time, we only want Smart Search enabled in faculty-facing courses (for training and development purposes), not for the dozens of student-facing courses. Thanks for any suggestions for help you can give us!

We have special 'testing' subaccounts where we place the few sites we want to test specific feature previews with. They have same settings as our root subaccount except for the feature preview we want to test enabled. We then move the select few sites from their default subaccount into this testing subaccount.
