New Feature: Instructor Field Now Available in Canvas Catalog

Give your course listings the personal touch they deserve

We’re excited to introduce the Instructor Field in Canvas Catalog. This new feature allows admins to clearly display who is leading each course, improving transparency and helping learners make more informed enrollment decisions using criteria they care deeply about.

Why this matters

Students care about who is teaching a course when they’re browsing course offerings, because they know their instructor determines their learning experience more than anything else. Previously, Canvas Catalog did not offer a dedicated or structured way to display instructor names on course listings. Admins often used inconsistent workarounds such as adding names in course descriptions or titles. As a result, students lacked clarity when browsing offerings and had no consistent way to evaluate who was teaching each course.

This update addresses those gaps by making instructor information a visible and reliable part of the course listing experience.

• A new Instructor field in the course listing editor
• Canvas user search with manual override for custom name entry
• Support for multiple instructors, with a required Primary Instructor
• Instructor names displayed on the listing card and course detail page
• Instructor details synchronized with Canvas if updated
• Optional Instructor filter on the Catalog homepage

How to get started

1. Open a course listing in the Catalog admin panel
2. Locate the new Instructor field in the editor
3. Begin typing to search Canvas users, or enter a name manually
4. Add multiple instructors if needed and designate a Primary Instructor
5. Save the listing to update the display
