@AkosFarago I find this post to be reassuring.  We are currently piloting Canvas Studio at our institution and are considering switching to Studio from Panopto.  In general, the UI and interface is great compared to Panopto.  We have been very nervous as there is no development on the roadmap .  It makes sense that bugs has been the focus, so your posts this year helps renew my faith in Studio. We have two major impediments to adopting Canvas Studio: 1. There is no way to get the data out of Studio in any bulk manner.  We believe strongly that we should own our data and there is no bulk download option.  This would make it impractical to leave the platform (each faculty would need to individually download each video) and is a major risk to us adopting the product. This may be a deal breaker for us and it is easily solvable.  I think it should be a core principle that clients own their data and you should support users in retrieving that data. 2. The migration process cannot be fully automated.  We can import all videos via the API, but we will need to have a user manually share collections through the UI as this cannot be handled through the API. This workaround, though annoying, is likely doable... we are testing approaches currently. I think some easy fixes to this are: Allow an admin user to see all videos, collections and courses in the system Provide a bulk download feature for a collection or course If an admin cannot be allowed to see all videos in the system, then provide a masquerade option with the masquerade feature mirrored in the API.  I would thinking simple giving an admin access to all videos is simpler to implement. Implementing either #1 or #2 would make the choice of Canvas Studio obvious for our institution but as it currently stands with no development in the roadmap and no obvious off ramp we are quite nervous to adopt Studio.  @emanuela ‌, I don't work for Instructure.  I work for a small College that uses their product.  We don't use ARC so I don't know it's feature set well. We have heavily customized Canvas in some cases to do the kinds of thing you ask for, so they seem very possible... with that said, it may or may not be your best solution.  You should engage with Canvas sales and get setup with a demo account if possible.  Some customizations (custom JavaScript and Custom CSS) you can't do with the free teacher account. ...  @emanuela ‌, You should try to leverage the built in features in Canvas as much as possible before moving to custom development.   1.  Canvas can limit progress using modules. So you can have students be unable to move forward until they view a resources, complete a quiz, etc... 2.  A built in method of assessing a video is to use a video as the description of a quiz... this way they watch the video and then take the quiz.  You can then allow multiple attempts.  I really like this method myself. 3.  You can embed an outside video tool that has pausing of videos with pop-up questions.  Instructure's product Arc may have the features you are looking for (Arc | A Better Video Platform for Better Online Learning ), or you may want to look at other toolsets (Camtasia and other products have these features) where you can simply embed the content. 4.  For our organization we often host the videos externally to canvas and embed the content (Vimeo, youtube, google drive, etc...).  This works for us well. ...  @ldix ‌ My guess is that the API key you created expired.  You may need to generate a new API key in Canvas and add it back to the spreadsheet. I know a bunch of staff here at Champlain College who continue to use it daily, so I would hear if it stops working. We haven't updated the code in a long time, but Instructure also hasn't changed the Canvas API, so the tool continues to be quite reliable. ... View more

Thanks for posting a well laid explanation. I have utilized this for a few projects.  From any html iframed from the file section of a course, that html can access other files in the same directory as the file.  This lets you import css and js files to use with the html file.  Just import these with their names as relative links. I did run into an issue, you cannot import from other folders in the files section (including sub-folders).  It only works from the same folder as the html file that you use as the source for the iframe. ... Really interesting discussion.  I find myself peeking at everyone's profile to see if this is for online courses or face to face.  Amazing to see Higher Ed institutions moving to more requirements on the face-to-face side. For online:    We use fully developed Master courses with a robust production process. For Face-to-Face:    We require that all faculty post their syllabus and have some activity with students in Canvas (this could be assignment, discussion, etc...).  We currently have no other requirement.  We do run a script to confirm that all faculty post their syllabus.  We use Canvas as a way of archiving syllabi as part of requirements for our accreditation.    We have achieved what I believe is a very high level of Canvas adoption.  We generate detailed stats on usage across the on-campus environment but we only ever report this in the aggregate and do not supply this data to administration.  For instance, we have been using percentage of courses with "5+ assignments with grades assigned" as one of our indicators of adoption. I implemented a solution for this using custom Javascript.  We store the the custom CSS files in a folder on Rackspace... but you could use any external server.  I originally wrote it where you store the css in the course's files, but this broke if Files was hidden. I agree with Alex here.  Canvas now supports pushing custom JS to the mobile app so matching features seems to make sense.  I still think that the use case needs to be considered: Are we talking about an individual power teacher who wants to cut and paste some <script> tag code into their content? Are we talking about a institution that produces high grades online content and has professional web developers who want more freedom? In situation #2, I would prefer the ability to sftp (or git push) CSS/HTML/JS into a course's files and a workflow that iframe embedded this content would be easiest and most secure.  This is almost supported already, but doing so requires a  bit of manual work and trickery...  I personally do not want the web developers working in our eLearning department even utilizing inline styles (or to do so rarely).  Defining CSS/JS at the account level allows us to enforce style consistency across our courses that is very valuable.  I personally even discourage our content developers from ever using the Canvas styleguide since we want to ensure that our content stays the same even if Instructure modifies this styleguide and it allows us to port content to a new LMS if ever necessary. As I read this, it is a much looser approach to security than what is currently in place (someone please correct me if I am wrong).  As an admin, we already have the ability to upload custom JS on the sub-account level, this would allow use of custom JS on individual pages. I am mixed feelings about this, the current way of getting dynamic content into Canvas is either: Embed using an iframe (you can do custom JS in that iFrame just fine currently but it will not allow access to the Canvas API, which makes this more secure but also more limited).  You can store the html, css and js in the files section of the course and then iframe in the html page... this works now.   Add custom JS at the sub-account level and likely trigger it only on the courses/pages that it applies to.  We have some JS/CSS built this way that works as a "styleguide" and just requires the use of id and class tags on individual pages to enable those elements. I personally feel like the JS may get people into trouble, but there are a number of script embeds that only support the script tag and not iframes and supporting these would be really handy. Even more important would be for the editor to NOT strip whitespace and CSS tags.  There are many CSS tags that it strips out and the stripping of whitespace makes it very hard to read complicated html when you re-edit a page. I would NOT want students to EVER be able to add JS to a page.  We have sophisticated students who could easily add JS that makes API calls as the user logged in.  This would be a big security no-no. I think a better solution would be to formalize a way to store html/js/css in the files section and then iframe embed this content.  This would be great for institutions that are used to custom generating code and this would sandbox this code from being able to make API calls with the credentials of the logged in user making it much easier to trust.  If you did this, then enabling SFTP access to the file section of a course would be really awesome! I am migrating a different feature request that I started into this request because as  @James  points out it overlaps significantly.  I am leaving in a few issues that are slightly tangientle to html in messaging because I believe they fundamentally overlap. The messaging and comments tool strips whitespace and does allow html.  This was probably designed to make txt messaging more effective.  In practice it is unhelpful and leads to confusion.  In addition the text messages sent are ineffective and useless.   Problems with the current system: The amount of the text included in text messages currently is so short that it is worthless.  An example of a text message I recently received (the text message cut-off exactly as I include it below): (Canvas Alert) Student Full Name (Course Full Title) just sent you a message in Canvas Hi Professor Blumberg, I can There is no link back to Canvas from text messages and the full message is cutoff  It appears like Canvas text notifications are limited to either 140 or 160 characters.  Now most phones/carriers can automatically split and combine larger text messages (up to 6 times this size).  This may result in greater SMS charges in some rare situations, though these situations are now fairly rare as most US based cell phone plans (and probably most international now as well) come with unlimited txt messaging. When including any programming code in a message or comment, all whitespace is stripped, making the code difficult to read.  This makes comments in programming courses very difficult.  This does not save much space but it makes the comments hard to read (even for non-programming topics) Allow html formatting in messages.  I believe the only reason formatting wasn't included is to support text messages.     Suggestions:   1.  Allow html in messages, simply use the normal wysiwyg editor 2. When sending a text notification for a message, if the message includes html then send: Student Full Name (Course short code) sent you a message in Canvas hyperlink back to Canvas (could launch mobile app or link to page in browser) If the message doesn't include html then send: Student Full Name sent you a message in Canvas Text of message either in full or partial based on notification settings   Since the notification is from notifications@instructure.com it is obvious that it is from Canvas.   2.  Allow users to set whether they want abridged or longer text notifications in the their personal settings.  Admins would be able to set the default behavior at the sub-account level.  There would probably still need to be a maximum size but it could be much larger (maybe 1600 characters).   3.  Include whitespace in messaging.  This is an easy change and would make it much easier to format feedback to students.   ...
