I teach computer science, and whitespace indentation is important for source code readability and sometimes functionality. Students submit code through the assignment text entry box, and their submissions are frequently stripped of the whitespace indentation, which makes the code difficult to assess. I have not been able to determine why the indentation is preserved in some submissions and not others, but it is definitely inconsistent.
Whitespace and indentation should always be preserved in assignment submissions that use the text entry box.
I have also noticed that whitespace indentation is also often stripped from submission comments as well

@jmsmit49 So the most common optimization for a user interface that is implemented in the backend/background is that if there is a common "next" resource that is going to be fetched by the user's interface/browser, then it is actually pre-fetched before the user actually chooses to get it. When something is pre-fetched, it is stored locally in cache, which allows the resource to be brought up instantly rather than having to wait for the request-response protocol that would typically happen when a user selects something.
So when we use the Speedgrader, you'll notice that it takes a few seconds for the assignment to come up in the window, so there's is this noticeable wait time because the browser has to request that assignment submission and have the server respond to it, which it can then render on the page. The most common use case is for the grader to grade an assignment and then proceed onto the next assignment, but if this is so commonly done, then it would make sense for Canvas to pre-fetch the next several assignments so that the grader does not have to wait for the window to request and render it

Within the Speedgrader, assignment submissions are only fetched at the moment the student is brought up, and the content is not cached either. There is a lot of waiting and latency when just bringing up a student's submission.
I suggest pre-fetching student submissions, so that the grader does not have to wait every time they bring up a new student.
Additionally, I suggest caching the content that was pulled so that a new request for the submission's content is not submitted every time a student is brought up.

In addition to modify the status flags, there should also be the ability to modify the number of days late. Essentially, all the submission modifications that can be made in the main gradebook's sidebar should be available in the speedgrader as well.

YES. If I have a gradebook with dozens of assignments, it becomes HUGE, and the common case is that I'm focusing on ungraded assignments. There should be a filter such that only columns with 1 or more ungraded submissions are shown

When using the Gradebook setting that auto assigns zeros to missing assignments, the zero does not go away when the assignment is turned in late. The status tag of the assignment is changed from missing to late; however, the grade is still a 0 (rather than just ungraded score). The other awkward user interface issue is that the gradebook shows the status of the assignment as "late" and "ungraded"; but hides that there is actually a zero assigned as a grade. The student sees the zero grade and asks why they have a zero even though they turned it in. Once a missing assignment is turned in late, and the status is modified from "missing" to "late", then the numerical grade should also be modified from Zero (0) to empty or ungraded.

It's fine if we cannot autofocus on the grade input box using default settings if you are trying to preserve accessibility by default. Can the autofocus on the grade box be made into a custom flag/switch to turn on? Also, I did not get a clear response on the effectiveness of the keyboard shortcuts if to use them, the user must use the mouse to click off the grade box.

The tab-index workflow does not seem optimized for the most common use case, which is to leave a plain comment. Moving the attach and audio buttons after the submit button would not interfere with the overall workflow because they can still shift-tab back. The page's accessibility is still there because attaching and adding audio can still be done by tabbing beyond the submit button. Those extra tab button clicks would still have to be done anyways every time anybody needs to submit because they have to tab beyond the attach and audio button. If optimizing for the common case is not possible, then how about the idea of adding a keyboard shortcut that submits (e.g. Ctrl-Enter) similar to email clients. I can also post this as a new idea if needed
