Can I ask what your role is @EricaAustin ? It may be that the BA or equivalent at your organisation (or perhaps your CSM if this was delivered by canvas) is able to share the reason why the dates are set the way they are by the integration, and what process(es) you have internally that need to be followed to modify these 🤓

This is a fundamental aspect of your integration design. A key concept here is a 'source of truth' that should be followed. It sounds like this for you is not canvas. A potential way to look into this would be to add some access globally from the enrolment system so, for example, the subjects open two weeks before the subject starts. There may be legislative, probity, or financial requirements that need to be followed globally. Integrations *can* be written to check if fields are not in sync or have been updated before applying changes (deltas) but these are much much harder to design, deploy, support, and take far longer to run. I'd suggest looking at where the dates are coming from, and determining if some logic can be added to avoid you needing to modify the dates at all - saving you time, and maintaining the 'truth' of the source enrolment in your Student info system.

Thread dig! I'm trying out pingdom to get a better view of system health and uptime; Any pointers on a reliable public-access page that will be indicative of platform health for logged-in users would be awesome. While I can monitor the login page, they are primarily static assets and won't give a true picture of the user experience. I'd rather not open up a course for public view for montioring due to the security risks of doing that and would love to hear what everyone else has in place 🙂

@bouzoukiman - Given the ideas section here is closed, I'd recommend talking to your CSM to make sure your institution's needs here are known. The whole ideas section and response has been... slow ... for a while, but it looks like progress is underway again and I'm hopeful canvas will soon have many of these small but significant gaps addressed.

I'm going to dissent here - Attempting to solve text input in a new way on one platform is not the right choice. Get your students familiar with the keyboard shortcuts - they're simple and direct for accents and punctuation used across languages other than english. on macOS, for example hitting [option+e] gives ´ and then the option to put a character underneath it. It's simple, fast, and doesn't require another solution to be learned and supported forever. It'd be great if canvas could accommodate things across and within the platform fully natively though - so characters like 🐸 don't break the gradebook export CSV, for example.

Thanks @nwilson7 - yes, I am the field admin. In the most recent case, the only notice provided was via the status page; about half an hour after the outage commenced, and also after the platform was responding to our checks too. Our CSM is great - and will be providing the report when it's done. The ones I've seen in the past are great for general users, but less detailed than what other vendors provide to technical support teams. The best I've seen went full-in-depth with the user action that triggered a race condition on a database table, how the issue was addressed, and then how the problem was traced, identified, and additional logic put in place to prevent a recurrence. I'd love to see that sort of detail here, but am not holding much hope. Canvas, at this point, is not kicking goals with the proactive comms when things don't go as well as hoped - to the point where I'm now actively investigating external uptime monitoring for our instance so we can know when the platform isn't responsive before users contact us.

This led to a general bad taste anytime we suggested a new feature or idea. We didn't feel like the company was listening and customer feedback wasn't really appreciated. 5 years ago when we began the move to Canvas as an institution we were excited and finally felt heard as users. Over the past three years, I'm starting to feel like Canvas is going down the same path as some of its competitors. Mmmmmhmmmm. Yup. All this @dorgant - Having moved onto this platform (joined a new institution) recently, I've been horrified with the lack of progress or response to seemingly fundamental issues, and really upset with the lack of customer-facing detail when things don't go as well as they could have.

Would love to know how and where we are able to access a Root Cause Analysis for any degradations and/or outages that affect us. Typically the status page is horrifically opaque: We have found the cause and have applied a fix for this behavior. Which is utterly not appropriate to provide to the administrative and development teams who support large-scale instances and who are accountable to providing outage details throughout our organisations. Additionally, our metrics of the-user-contacts-us-to-report-a-problem are consistently more rapid than any monitoring you appear to have in place. Allowing us to generate internal comms IN ADVANCE of user reports is necessary and should not be controversial. Providing full and open detail on what went wrong and why should also be seen as necessary. If you can't explain it to us in customer-facing terms, I don't think you understand your platform properly.

This seems extraordinarily slow - having a load dialog visible for a full minute with no responses is not a great experience to someone clicking into the search field. 😞 Then having the same result to entering a space in the field. This looks near-unusable at scale. How do I tell apart users who happen to have the same first and last names, or the same person who may have differentiated staff and student accounts? Please tell me you're not attempting to populate the entire user list into the drop-down....

This is both excellent and concerning 🙂 The current ideas process is pretty clearly broken, and the links both ways into and out of the engineering teams seem somewhat constricted from this end. As part of a mult-layered support structure here to serve a student population of near 50,000 there are often features that simply don't scale to the extent we need - even fundamental things like the gradebook, and speedgrader. While voting is brilliant when most of those who are engaged here have similar needs, I'm concerned it could lead to a much stronger K-12 focus for the platform which would be categorically disastrous in the longer term for us. Your transition to a more platform-like approach is brilliant, and we're really looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

Not just students! Each assignment submission should be listed as a separate activity, not under the last activity access. Admins will be asked when submissions were made for probity checks, and some settings preclude this.

This feeds into another concept I'd raised an idea for - splitting out account 'roles' from 'Administrator' access. We deal with this administratively by only allowing our central admins to assign admin roles. It'd be great if we could delegate this through this mechanism - a good idea!
