MASTERY CUT SCORES   |   RECOMMENDED SCORES   MASTERY CUT SCORES Cut scores are used to determine where students are performing per standard. It is up to the creator of the assessment to determine what the cut scores will be for that assessment.  Below you will find recommendations based on the Mastery Tier levels you are using in your district.  These recommendations are based on decades of educational research. Persistently scoring  80% > Mastery Retain knowledge/skills at higher rate year-to-year Higher transfer of knowledge/skills across disciplines 3 TIER MASTERY CUT SCORES The recommendation for 3 tier mastery levels follows the "80/50" split rule of Mastery Learning. Mastery = 80-100% Near Mastery = 50-79% Remediation = <49% 4 TIER MASTERY CUT SCORES The recommendation for 4 tier mastery levels follows the "100/80/50" split rule of Mastery Learning. Advance/Exceeds Mastery = 100% Mastery = 80-100% Near Mastery = 50-79% Remediation = <49% PRO TIP: Create a chart to share out with your district or school. This will support everyone using the same cut scores for each standard on an assessment. 3 Tier Mastery Cut Score Sample Template 4 Tier Mastery Cut Score Sample Template   MASTERY CUT SCORES   |   CONSISTENT APPROACH   COMPARABLE DATA What happens if teachers have different or inconsistent cut scores? First off data is not comparable from one assessment to another One group of students is being held to a higher standard than the other.  In this example, both assessments have 5 questions. All levels in this example are vastly different. Students who scored the same amount would receive different levels depending on the assessment. Scoring a 2 on Assessment 1 would result in Remediation where on Assessment 2 it is considered Mastery.  PRO TIP: You can easily check the cut scores of an assessment by looking at the assessment on the tracker. If you notice that the cut scores are incorrect you can quickly fix them which will fix the mastery levels on your data and tracker. Use the Pencil next to the Mastery Levels to change the cut scores.   MASTERY CUT SCORES   |   APPLYING THEM   CREATING AN ASSESSMENT At the end of creating any assessment on Mastery Connect you will be asked to put in mastery levels. If you are creating a single standard assessment you will only put in one set of cut scores. If you are creating a Multi-Standard assessment you will put in these scores for each standard.   PRO TIP: In order to see a range in ability it is recommended that you assess at least 3 - 4 questions per standard. 3 Tier Assessments  As you can see in the 3 Tier image above when only 1 standard is assessed you only get 2 colors instead of the range of 3 colors 4 Tier Assessments  As you can see in the image above when only fewer standards are assessed you loose the range of colors.     FINAL THOUGHTS It is strongly recommended that you have a consistent approach to mastery scores at the district and school levels. When a consistent approach to mastery cut scores are in place your data is comparable across disciplines and grade levels. Although you may see Mastery View Predictive Assessments in your account while they are being built, do not manage them until you have received an email from the assessment team confirming they are finalized and ready to be managed. MANAGING MVPA Click Admin Select Assessments → Benchmarks Find the Assessment and Click Manage Next, you will need to toggle on the Auto-deliver any new matching trackers (this is located under all of the schools) and select all of the schools that would need to receive that MVPA.  Add any necessary Tools and Accommodations Click Save **For special cases some schools will already have the Auto-deliver toggle on and any schools that match the assessment selected.  Tools and Accommodations: the MVPA Online Assessment team WILL set the calculators for you on the Assessments or Sections that are Calculator Active , but you should confirm the calculator option we chose is the preferred option for that Calc Active assessment/section of the MVPA. PREPARATION GUIDE   |   MASTERY VIEW PREDICTIVE ASSESSMENTS   Check out this Mastery View Predictive Assessments Preparation Guide, created by our wonderful CSM Amanda Bradley, for five tips to prepare for MVPAs!     SHARE MAPS - Sharing Curriculum Maps will take about 15 minutes of your time and it is a very important step. This will put the Maps into a list for teachers to choose from when they are creating their trackers.  VERIFY TRACKERS -  Verifying trackers is a step that will help you to make sure teachers have created their trackers correctly from the Curriculum Map and are ready to deliver the Mastery View Predictive Assessments.   MANAGE - All of these tasks can be overwhelming for one person to handle. Consider training a team to assist you during your testing windows. They may need a change in roles/permissions to have access to help you. Please consult the following document to help you decide what roles your helpers will need. SCHEDULE & EDIT  - The Mastery View Predictive Assessment Team will have the Mastery View Predictive Assessments scheduled three to five days prior to your assessment window.  At that time, the District Administrators and Benchmark Facilitators will take over the management of the Mastery View Predictive Assessments. SUPPORT - Do not adjust any of the settings on your Predictive Assessments until you have received an email from the Assessment Team saying that your assessments are ready. CREATE A MASTERY TRACKER | MASTERY CONNECT    BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO CREATE YOUR TRACKER Make Sure Curriculum Maps have been shared with you Make sure your Students have been Synced CREATING YOUR TRACKER Login to Mastery Connect Click on the Tracker Tab   Click on Create Tracker Select Curriculum Map from the drop down menu Select Shared with Me Find and select the correct map for this tracker TRACKER INFORMATION Description (make sure you follow your district's/school's preference for naming) Edit the color If your account is synced select the correct class Click on Create Tracker TRACKER  Now that your new tracker is created, take this time to make sure everything is correct! PRO TIP: If you switch grade levels or subject areas you will have to update your profile in order to see the correct Curriculum Map in the Shared with Me drop down. Locate Edit Profile under your image on your Home tab of Mastery Connect to update your current grade/subject.      CREATE A MASTERY TRACKER | CANVAS   BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO CREATE YOUR TRACKER Make sure Curriculum Maps have been shared with you Make sure your Students have been Synced CREATING YOUR TRACKER Login to Canvas Click on  Course in the Global Navigation Bar Select the correct course Click the Navigation Menu to access a sub menu Click on Mastery Tracker Under the panda image click on Link Mastery Tracker On the new window you will select the down arrow Select Create a New Tracker from a Curriculum Map Under Available Maps click the down arrow Find and select the correct map for this tracker  TRACKER INFORMATION Title (make sure you follow your district's/school's preference for naming) Click on Link TRACKER  Now that your new tracker is created, take this time to make sure everything is correct! PRO TIP: If you notice anything is incorrect, you will want to unlink the Mastery Tracker and repeat the steps. You do not want to unlink a Mastery Tracker after there is data in it.   FINAL THOUGHTS Creating a Mastery Tracker in Mastery Connect or Canvas is a relatively straightforward, but particularly important process for using Mastery Connect and delivering Mastery View Predictive Assessments. And, Curriculum Maps are a great blueprint to use to help organize and ensure your Mastery Trackers are aligned to the correct standards!
