Is it just affecting one course or all? Does it also show the squares in other web browsers? My first thought was emojis, but usually the emojis have the question mark in the middle.

You could probably try it out and enable it through the beta or test environment

You should be able to "share" the link on Google Docs as view only when you hyperlink it to your student handbook! That way, students can just view it and not edit the file.
