Yes, if you can't click on it, then it sounds to me like it is some policy that your University has instituted. We have several classes that store HTML in local folders, and I would hear a great outcry if they stopped working, so I know that it works for other instructors at our college. Just as a test, though, I'd try the simplest "hello world" index.html page (no CSS and JavaScript) and see if that worked. If it doesn't, then it's your University's settings. If it does work, I'd start adding css, and then JavaScript to see if there was something that didn't work. For instance, I noticed one instructor who had a problem with certain CSS tags (@Font I believe), since they required a lookup and that lookup was on another server.

The breadcrumbs which are supposed to be an aid to navigation are completely useless for the students. They click the highlighted link to go back. Canvas shows them an error message saying "This page has been disabled for this course" and they are dropped on the home page. How cruel. (BTW, I have read the discussions about path-based versus location-based breadcrumbs and realize that the designers of Canvas have a yen for location-based. What I'm trying to point out is how destructive this is to the student's user experience.) It's been suggested that we could remove them with a bit of css. If only we (instructors) had the ability to control the css for our courses. BTW, I don't use modules in my courses at all. I simply want path-based breadcrumbs. The location in the overall site is an implementation detail, NOT a logical detail. The students should never be exposed to the fact that a "bucket" called Pages even exists.

Hello Jeffrey. I do what you are asking for frequently. If the web page works locally, it should work from Canvas Files with no changes (including the css and js files). If you want it embedded, then use an iframe, but otherwise a regular link works OK. Here's how I do it. First, I upload the folders with images, html and css. You don't see the css in this picture because I use the same css for all of the pages, so I use a relative URL ../cs170.css. If I click on the link for index.html, it shows me my page, along with all of the css. If that doesn't work, then linking to it will not work. Second I right-click the index.html in Files and save the URL. Third, I create an external link and paste the saved URL, removing the query string (the ? and anything following that). Now, clicking the link will open the page in a new tab with all the CSS displayed. If you want to show it inside Canvas itself, just add an iframe in the Assignment instructions, remembering to remove the query string when you paste in the URL.

Starting yesterday, Canvas changed the HTML code that is generated for external tools. In my case, my Canvas class makes extensive use of Cay Horstmann's excellent CodeCheck tool. Prior to yesterday, the code generated by Canvas when inserting an external tool looked like this: <iframe src="about:blank" name="tool_content" id="tool_content" class="tool_launch" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" webkitallowfullscreen="true" mozallowfullscreen="true" tabindex="0" title="REX 9A" style="height:100%;width:100%;" allow="geolocation *; microphone *; camera *; midi *; encrypted-media *; autoplay *; clipboard-write *; display-capture *" data-lti-launch="true"><iframe> If I save an assignment today, Canvas generates the same code, except, that the highlighted portion is changed to: style="height:px;width:px;" With no size or anything provided for the height or width. The effect is that all of our assignments now appear in a tiny window on the screen. (If I don't save or modify the assignments, they still work fine. If I click the Save button, they are overwritten with the new code.) I'm hoping that someone who has the same problem, or someone who works for Canvas, or someone who has the ability to file a support ticket with Canvas) will raise this issue with support. Hello. I frequently do this without any download link or title. Upload the files to Canvas (I just zip them up locally, so they are in their own folder when uploaded) In Files, find the file you want to display (usually index.html) and right-click to get it's link. Create an iframe and use the address as the src, after removing everything following the question mark (?) including the question mark. The URL should end with /download. Now your page will appear with all of the CSS and JavaScript, with no extra file name or download.

This has been especially frustrating for me. For our exams we want to use an external tool which automatically grades our programming exams and submits the scores to Canvas. However, since only Assignments have the External Tool we have to make these assignments. However, since assignments don't have the Filter IP restriction and don't close access to the assignment when the due date occurs, students can take the exam at home rather than in the proctored classroom. (Assignments also don't benefit from the lockdown browser). Trying to work around these limitations consumes an inordinate amount of my time. I would like to either a) have external tool question in Quizzes, or b) have the same restriction options in assignments.

Thanks for all of you who replied. I did reach out to Canvas support at my college and they were able to resolve the issue (even though I'm not sure how). It seemed to be an interaction with the LTI. Our semester is just starting and apparently there were a slew of professors who had similar problems. In any event, it seems to be fixed for me. Thanks again.

My class starts today (at 2:30) but several of my students showed up in Zoom at 12 noon. When I asked why, they said that's what the Calendar said. I went to the Calendar and, sure enough, it shows the Zoom classes starting at 12 noon. All of my other classes are similarly incorrect ONLY for the Zoom links. Is there any way to fix this. In the Zoom tool on Canvas (not the Calendar) everything shows up OK. The Time Zone is set correctly both on the Zoom page and on my account in Canvas.

I am currently using quizzes for this. However it has one big problem. With assignments, if students turn it in late they can still upload the file and it is marked as late. With quizzes, once the time expires they can't upload the file. That means that I have to deal with students asking if they can email the file because time ran out. I would much prefer that it worked like assignments, that students could still upload but have it marked late. This is especially a problem since students cannot see the timer while they are completing the assignment, which is done in an entirely separate tab.

None of the links work on that page. I'll try a different browser. OK, switching to Edge worked. It didn't open in Firefox or Chrome, however.

I allow students to take their pre-class quizzes twice and record the highest grade. At least I thought I did. Instead, the interaction with the late policy means that if they retake a quiz after the deadline, and get a higher score, the late deduction wipes out their previous score. Not exactly what I intended. Is there a solution?

Hi Lisa. Here is what I've done that seems to work OK in certain situations. I write my page using normal CSS (a style sheet or embedded css) and then run it through Pre-flight mailer. This Canadian Web app was originally created to embed CSS in email for newsletters. It reads your page and turns your embedded and external style sheets into inline CSS. Premailer: pre-flight for HTML email

I've used Forms to import grades into Canvas often. I don't know if things have changed if you convert them to a quiz. Here's what I do using Excel. I haven't tried it using only Chromebook and Google Sheets but it should work. I have a master workbook called gradebook that is just the download of the Canvas gradebook, with all columns past column F (Section at our school) deleted. I copy the grades from each Google Sheet linked to the form into my workbook, like this. (This one is for homework, since students turn in their assignments using a Google form) I create a column in the Gradebook using the column name that Canvas wants and use a VLOOKUP formula to put the percentage into a column (as below). Saving the gradebook sheet as a CSV file saves only the one page and it can be uploaded directly to canvas. Here's a picture of one of my spreadsheets this semester. This sounds like a lot of work, but, in fact it takes me less than 5 minutes, from start to finish, to upload the student's grades for each assignment.

Can you explain more how the grades can be "easily bypassed with Google Accounts". I'm not sure what you are saying.
