Still not solved
I think this problem is solved by the new rich content editor Canvas is rolling out right now: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-17764-canvas-release-new-rich-content-editor
I am doing an exam at this moment with 60+ students, who are typing answers in essay questions. Several students reported this very same problem to me. This is still not resolved.
