What is the Canvas release schedule for beta, production, and test environments?

Instructure is committed to consistently improving the Canvas user experience. Our cloud-based platform allows us to maintain an agile production cycle and provide users with bug fixes, enhancements, and new features in three Canvas environments: beta, production, and test. All Canvas environments are also available on any mobile app; just use the appropriate Canvas URL.

 

Beta and Production updates are outlined in Canvas Product Release Notes.

The beta environment allows you to explore the most recent Canvas features before they reach production. The beta environment is overwritten with data from the production environment every Saturday*. Any work or content you add to your beta environment will be overwritten every week.

 

Additionally, every three weeks, new code is placed in your beta environment as indicated by the Canvas Beta Release Notes. Beta release notes can include new features, updates to existing features, or new or updated APIs. Beta notes are distributed every three weeks on the following Mondays* (unless otherwise specified):

  • 10 April 2017
  • 1 May 2017
  • 22 May 2017
  • 12 June 2017
  • 5 July 2017 (in observance of Independence Day in the United States)

The production environment is your live, working environment where you users interact with Canvas. Every three weeks, new code is placed in your production environment as indicated by the Canvas Production Release Notes. Changes to your production environment are new features, updates to existing features, or new or updated APIs.

 

Release notes are distributed the Monday before the production release, which takes place every three weeks on the following Saturdays* (unless otherwise specified):

 

  • 7 January 2017 (release notes published 3 January)
  • 28 January 2017
  • 18 February 2017
  • 11 March 2017
  • 1 April 2017
  • 22 April 2017
  • 13 May 2017
  • 3 June 2017 (release notes published 30 May)
  • 24 June 2017

Every three weeks after the production release, the test environment is overwritten with data from the production environment (which also includes the new and updated features from the beta environment) and allows you to test your real data without compromising any user content.

 

The test environment is updated on the same Saturdays as indicated for the production environment (unless otherwise specified).
