Hello Canvas Admins!

 

We appreciate all of the feedback we've received regarding the need for better communication of permission updates.

 

This purpose of this document is to inform you of any updates or changes that are made to the Canvas Course Role Permissions and Canvas Account Role Permissions PDF documents. We will specify which permission was updated and what specifically changed with the permission. We typically publish updates to the permission documents on production release days, when necessary. Occasionally, we may publish updates in between release cycles.

 

The most recent update(s) will always be listed at the top of this document.

 

Follow this document if you want to receive update notifications. We will continue to do our best to provide the most accurate information, but as always, please let us know if you find any inconsistencies.

Manage (add / edit / delete) courses

  • Role: Account
  • Permission name updated from Course - add / edit / remove to Courses - add / edit / remove.

  • Additional Considerations: added To allow an account-level user to delete a course, Change Course State must also be enabled to Course Settings row

  • Additional Considerations: renamed Account Settings row to Course Settings
  • Additional Considerations: changed text in Course Settings row to For course-level users, deleting a course is part of the Change Course State permission. However, for account-level users, deleting a course also requires the Manage (add / edit / delete) courses permission.

Terminology Update: In the Account Permissions PDF, "People (Account)" has replaced "Users" in reference to the account navigation link to view and manage users for the account. This change helps align terminology in the PDF with the Canvas UI. 

 

Manage SIS data

  • Role: Account

Modify login details for users

  • Role: Account
  • Features Affected: Removed Allows user to view user account details 
  • Features Affected: Added Allows user to modify user account details such as name, email, and time zone
  • Additional Considerations: added the following considerations to the People (Account) row
    • To view user account details, See the list of users must be enabled
    • To view a user's SIS ID, Manage SIS data or Read SIS data must also be enabled
    • To view a user's Integration ID, Manage SIS data must also be enabled

View Grade Change Logs

  • Role: Account
  • Additional Considerations: Added To search by course ID or assignment ID, Edit grades must also be enabled and To search by Assignment ID only, View all grades must also be enabled.

  • Features Affected: Added Admin Tools (Logging tab): Allows user to search by course ID or assignment ID in grade change logs in Admin Tools.
  • Additional Considerations: Added To search grade change logs, View grade change logs must also be enabled.
