The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
I have two different quizzes that I'm trying to edit, and with both of them, I keep getting a page that says "504 Gateway Timeout" after hitting the "edit" button. Nothing else is on the page.
Both quizzes are rather large. I have previously edited both quizzes successfully, but I have now tried multiple times to open them to no avail. I've tried quitting and re-opening Chrome. I've tried opening (one of them) on two different days. Anyone have any ideas what else I can try?
[Disclaimer: if I need to do something "techy," please give me a very detailed description. I can follow directions, but if I'm doing something involving coding, I have no idea what I'm doing.]
Thanks!
Hello there, @MissScarfi ...
For 504 Gateway Timeout messages, I would suggest that you contact the folks at the Canvas Help Desk. They may have some suggestions for you and may also be able to take a closer look at your account and your course(s) to see what might be going on. This might be a bit difficult to troubleshoot here in the Community because we do not have access to your school's Canvas environment or your course(s). But, Canvas tech support should be able to access your course to see what might be going on. Please come back to this topic after you've spoken with them to provide an update (and hopefully a solution). How do I contact Canvas Support? - Canvas Community
Thanks! Take care...be well.
I just contacted customer support, and got this message:
Hello Miss Scarfi,
Thank you again for contacting Canvas Support.
As you may know, many businesses have been impacted by Covid-19 in unexpected ways. Canvas Support has seen such a large increase in volume that we are no longer able to provide support for all Free For Teacher help requests. We will still provide support for the following request types:
Deleting Accounts
Restoring Deleted Courses
Resetting Passwords
Making Courses Public
For assistance with any other issue, please visit the Canvas Community at https://community.canvaslms.com.
We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause.
Sincerely,
Canvas Support
Thank you for the clarification that you are using a FFT account. The response you got from Canvas Support sounds very similar to this FAQs document: Free-for-Teacher Account FAQ - Canvas Community. Since the vast majority of Community users don't have access to your course, it may be a bit difficult to diagnose this here. Have you tried clearing your browser cache/history to see if that might help resolve things?
Once you clear your cache/history, close down your browser completely, and then re-start the browser to see if you notice anything different. Also, you might try using a completely different browser...such as an up-to-date version of Chrome or Firefox.
Keep us posted...thanks!
Hello Chris, im facing the same issue when trying to access the peer review page via assignments. As some of my students are receiving peer reviews they are not supposed to. However, i can't access the peer review page due to 504 Gateway error. Is there any other way? Have already cleared cache. Am also using a FFT account. Thanks
Can you send me the course links, and I can take a look? Thanks.
