The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Hey,
Currently it is not possible to upload a file (Excel, pdf, etc.) in New Quizzes questions or item banks. Is this a feature that will be added in the future (I could not find it on the Timeline Overview for New Quizzes)? Or is there a way to work around this issue?
Some of our courses use this feature in Classical Quizzes so it would be helpful if the same functionalities are available before Classical Quizzes disappears.
Good morning, @FreavD ...
Are you asking about the File Upload question type that exists for current/classic Quizzes? If so, there should be a similar option in New Quizzes, too. Please check out this Guide: How do I create a File Upload assessment question ... - Canvas Community.
I hope this helps to answer your question. Sing out if you have any other comments/questions about this...thanks! Take care, stay safe, and be well.
Thankyou for your reply, but this is not what I meant.
What I am referring to is the option for teachers to attach files to their questions. E.g. One of our Quantitative Methods teacher uses this functionality in Classical Quizzes to provide students with the right Excel sheet with right questions. They need these sheets to distil information and answer the questions correctly.
As far as I can see, this option is not available to teacher in New Quizzes (only images, audio, and video are possible). Will this be an option in the future?
Hello there, @FreavD ...
Thank you for the additional information, and my apologies for the delay in responding. It looks like you are correct that you cannot attach files to questions in New Quizzes using files that you have already loaded into your course "Files". I found an existing Feature Idea for you that seems to be similar to what you are requesting: Ability to add attachments to questions in New Qui... - Canvas Community. If you feel that this Feature Idea aligns with something that you would like to see implemented by Instructure, you might want to consider giving it a star rating and also posting a comment to it ... maybe even providing a use case scenario so that their developers know why this would be important to you.
As a work-around, have you thought of maybe providing links to files if you would be willing to store those files in something like Google Drive or Dropbox? I realize that the files technically would not be loaded directly in your Canvas course, but at least you could provide a link to those files that only they would have access to. Of course, you'd need to make sure that your file and folder permissions on those other sites were set correctly so that students are able to download the files right away. Just a thought.
I hope this information will be of help to you. Take care...
@FreavD, you might also want to add your support to New Quizzes - RCE to match Canvas - Canvas Community (which should, if implemented, incorporate the ability to upload files via the RCE). There's also one more related Idea Conversation focused on files linked from a Stimulus in New Quizzes:
