Hi Dalena,

By default all students will be notified if you post a course announcement or send them an inbox message.  However, each Canvas user may control their own notification settings so it is possible for students to disable notifications.  Does that answer your question?

Some students will get notifications in their email, others with push notifications. This is something that each user controls, so you won't be able to set a default for your class participants. (How do I set my Canvas notification preferences as a student?‌)
