I can't find the answer to this anywhere - how large a file can students submit for an assignment and do you need to change course storage quotas to store assignments long term?

Good morning, @stephen_taylor ...
Both of these Guides indicate that file submissions are limited to a maximum of 5 GB:
Also, file submission are never submitted to the course "Files" area. A copy of any file is always saved to the user's "Files" area ("Account" >> "Files"). Open up the "My Files" folder, and you should see a locked "Submissions" folder. Within there, this is where you should see a folder for each of the courses you are taking as a student. Files within the "Submissions" folder do not count against your individual user quota for personal storage.
I hope that helps a bit, Stephen. Let Community members know if you have any other questions about this...thanks!

5gb individually or 5gb for all assignments submitted by that student? That's whats unclear to me.
@stephen_taylor ...
Well, it says, "Canvas does not support file uploads larger than 5 GB." So, I would assume that it refer to one file being no larger than 5 GB. I could be totally wrong, though. I would recommend that you post a question to the bottom of one of those Guides (or maybe both) so that the Canvas Documents Team can help clarify that. Maybe they will consider even modifying the text in those Guides to make it more clear. They are always open to our suggestions. 😊

Hi Chris,
Your answer appears to be from a student's point of view ("the courses you are taking as a student").
I have the same question, but from the course owner's point of view. When students submit assignment files, do they fill up the course space allocation? (which appears to be only 1.1 GB on our system). We have just switched from using Blackboard, where it was typical to receive 2 GB of submissions per course.
Thanks,
Ray
@Ray_Butler ...
To my knowledge, student submissions should not fill up your course storage space in the course "Files"...so that *shouldn't* be an issue.
