Because there is no single right answer to your question, I have changed it to a discussion.

I think the discussion between wide-screen and standard ratio would greatly depend on what the webcam is being used for. Many modern webcams offer both resolutions in a single camera.

We always use Logitech 9000 series webcams with built-in microphones, but not for any reasons beyond the facts that they work, are reliable, and quite inexpensive.

If you describe your planned uses, there are lots of techies in here who can much better advise you.
