Can I use groups to assign individual assignments (not a group assignment)?  I have a tracked, self-paced course that differentiates assignments by a college prep and honors track.  The assignments are different for students, and I am trying to list ONLY the assignments in their modules that apply to their track.  The only way I can get their assignments to appear currently is by manually adding each student to the assignment.  I would like to JUST pick a group that the student in assigned to.

Is this possible?

It sounds like you want to use Sections and not Groups. Groups are for group assignments where one submission is made for the entire group. Sections allow you to use differentiated assignments where you can assign assignment to certain groups of students.

I had the same question, Keith.  How did you create sections?  I see the setting "sections"  next to course details under "settings", but I thought that was an admin set up.  I'm thinking of sections as in I teach two sections of ENG 101 with two sets of class rosters.  I need to organize my class roster in two separate groups, so like you, I can assign different, individual assignments to different groups within the same course.  Boy...that sounded confusing...hope that makes sense anyway. lol

HI Kimberley,

It's merely a matter of permissions. If your institution allows instructors to modify content in the course, then happy section-making. Just name it appropriately, ie Bio 101_Blue Group_Cell Disc to make it easy to find. Once made, it's easy to assign a section to complete a certain assignment.

I had a similar issue and I do understand I can use Sections - essentially duplicating all my Groups as Sections - but still curious why I can't use Groups in an Individual assignment.  Here is my use case in which I think being able to use Groups would be preferable:

• The class is Team based - each student is on a Team.  I use Groups to create the Teams.  Let's say there are 4 Teams in the class
• Team 1 has a Group Assignment to analyze a case study and then give a POV presentation. I create a Group Assignment for them.
• The rest of the class has an Individual Assignment where the give their feedback / critique of Team 1's presentation.
• If I had a "not Team 1", that would work, so instead I would like to create an Individual Assignment for everyone not in Team 1 or namely everyone in Team 2, Team 3 and Team 4. 
• Since I already have the Groups defined, it would be easiest if I could just assign the Individual Assignment to Team 2, Team 3, and Team 4 people who would each do the Assignment individually.
