The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December.

Hello,
My community college is migrating to Canvas in Fall 2016. I am trying to think of ways that we can take advantage of Canvas in Student Support Services. So, how could The Reading & Writiing Center or Tutorial Services use Canvas? Does any one have any examples or success stories?
Thanks!
Maryanne
We embed tutors into classes, so that a tutor is present in Canvas for a course. The tutor can access course content and can communicate with students via Canvas conversations. Often, professors will send the tutor a list of students who may benefit from help, and the tutor can reach out. In some cases, full time tutors with Masters degrees have TA access; these tutors can see grades and reach out to students based on information from the course's grade book. We have only done this for a few semesters, but it seems to be working well.
Hi Dallas,
Thanks for the idea of the embedded tutor. I will discuss this option with our Tutorial folks. We have in-person embedded tutors, so online shouldn't be too difficult to implement.
Regards,
Maryanne
For what it is worth; we tried this idea when I worked at a community college and it was well received.
@maryanne_mills , in order to keep this excellent topic for conversation open-ended, with no single "correct answer" implied, I've changed the format to a discussion.
Our community college has a Writing Center at one of the campuses and the Center has its own Canvas page. Students have access, as well as the peer tutors who work with the Center. We also use it to keep an online resource page for student writers.
Also, many individual instructors post links on our class pages to various student services offered at the school.
For anyone interested in this topic, be sure to RSVP to the CanvasLIVE event Let Data Be Your Compass: Effective Use of Instructional Data which is coming up this Thursday, November 3, 2016. If you are able to attend, RSVP "Yes"--and if you're interested, but your schedule doesn’t allow you to attend in real time, RSVP "No" or "Maybe" to receive any post-event updates.
