The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December.
Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Hi Canvas Community
Within a Canvas Rubric, is there a way to move around the order of the criteria? At the moment, I am only able to add new criteria to the bottom of the rubric, but I'd really like to be able to add it to the 3rd row (for example).
Best,
-Rayna

Hi @rayna_friendly - Unfortunately, this is not possible in Canvas currently. However, the great @James has written a program that will work around this limitation that only requires a browser extension called Tampermonkey to implement. He has great instructions and a write-up of how to do it here: https://community.canvaslms.com/groups/designers/blog/2015/08/25/sorting-rubrics-made-easy . I can attest that it works, as I used to help another faculty member earlier this term.
Hope this helps, Rayna.

The link is dead. please help! I need to reorder rubric criteria too
Hi @dbrookes ...
The link that Ken Black (now retired from the Community) was from when the Community was using a different platform. Unfortunately, this was one of those links that didn't migrate properly when Instructure moved the Community website to a new platform in the Summer of 2020. One of the nice things is that if a link doesn't work, you *might* still be able to find a working link by just looking at the old URL. The article that Ken referenced was "Sorting Rubics Made Easy", and that is what you can type into the search bar at the top of any page here in the Community. This page, Canvancements - Canvas Enhancements - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com), is full of "Canvancements" (Canvas Enhancements) created by @James Jones. One of these Canvancements is Sorting Rubrics Made Easy - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com) ... the one you are looking for. 😊
I hope this will be of help to you! Let Community members know if you have any other questions about this...thanks!
This seems like an easy upgrade. This is terribly cumbersome. How do encourage Canvas to make this happen?
Hi Kari,
There is an idea to do this, and add other editing features to rubrics: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/1130-editing-capabilities-for-rubrics
Please vote it up!
