[ARCHIVED] Disabling comments in Canvas Studio

I am trying to embed a video from Canvas Studio into an assignment for one of my classes. I can get the video embedded just fine. But I cannot seem to disable comments. When I am editing the video and inserting captions, I can click on the gear icon and turn off comments. But when I then embed it in the canvas page that I want it to be seen, I see that comments are allowed, and the field below the video that invites students to comment, is shown.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to do, if this is the correct approach to resolving my issue. Can someone break that response down for me?

Here's the original answer and then I'll explain it.

Unfortunately, once you have embedded a Studio video into your course, you cannot remove the comments...at least there is no interface that allows you to toggle the comments on/off within the embed.  What you have to do is to remove the Studio from the page and then re-add the Studio video...this time being sure to keep the toggle switch turned off that allows for comments.  Then, the Studio video will display without the comments interface for you like you want.

Take the video out of your course. (If you have it in studio, you can just delete it.)

Now click on the icon that allows you to embed videos from Canvas Studio. When you click on your video, toggle off the embed option to display media tabs. (They should have labeled this differently.) Now click embed at the bottom of the pop up menu. That should work.

I'm not sure I agree with the text I've highlighted in bold.  I'm not sure why it would be necessary to delete the video in @paul_rittman's Studio library.  It sounds like he is wanting to embed the Studio video in his course without any comments.  Once Paul has included the video in his Studio library, he can then use this Guide to embed the video in any of his courses.  How do I embed Canvas Studio media in a Canvas cou... - Instructure Community  The section on "Select Embed Options" shows how you can toggle the "Display Media Tabs" option on/off to include (or not include) an area for commenting on the video.

@Chris_Hofer @paul_rittman @derek4 To my mind there's a bug here. (I think this is related, but may be a new nuance)

The disable comments toggle does not stick inside Studio. If I navigate away, and back, then Comments  defaults back to "Enabled".

Then, when embedding the video on a Canvas page, the only way to remove comments is to turn off "Display Media Tabs". BUT this turns off the ability to use captions.

I cannot find a way to get Captions turned on, and Comments turned off without losing Captions.

The "Display Media Tabs" toggle switch when initially embedding a Studio video into your course is not the same as the "Comments" toggle switch that is part of the "Settings" cog wheel icon at the bottom right corner of Studio videos.  This means that toggling the "Comments" switch on/off does not add/remove the tabs for "Details", "Comments", "Insights", and "Captions" when you toggle the "Display Media Tabs" option on.  According to the information under the heading "View Comments" of this Guide, How do I play a media file in Canvas Studio? - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com), the "Comments" toggle switch is used to display inline comments.  I do understand, however, that it would be nice if you wanted the comments to remain off that the "Comments" toggle switch would honor your own settings.  I'm not sure if this Feature Idea totally gets at what you are looking for, but I thought I'd share a link:

Last night I had tried to embed a Studio video from my own Studio library into a page in my course.  I embedded the video twice on the page...once with the "Display Media Tabs" option selected, and once without.  When I embedded the video without the "Display Media Tabs" selected, the Closed Captions icon at the bottom right corner of the video was not showing...though it was showing if I turned the "Display Media Tabs" option on.  This morning I re-visited the page I had made last night.  Lo and behold, I can now see the Closed Captions icon on both videos.  So, I am not sure what changed overnight

HI @Chris_Hofer - appreciate the insights and assistance.

Our Canvas Support Mgr got back to the team to say, "So upon digging a bit deeper there was a behavior identified today where Studio videos are not showing captions as being on the video unless media tabs are enabled. Since this issue started occurring today it appears our engineering team is still working on a fix".

Like you, I've checked our vids again this morning and this issue seems to have been patched/fixed overnight. CC are back without requiring Display Media Tabs be turned on! Thanks again.
