[ARCHIVED] Embedded Video

We have students who are unable to view YouTube videos which have been embedded within Canvas courses.

• The YouTube videos have been approved for students to view from the video URL.
• The students are able to view the video from YouTube itself.
• The embedded videos won't play from within the Canvas interface.

Any suggestions?

@jason_waltz It sounds like you are whitelisting videos to be viewed based on the students' credentials.  If this is the case, embedded videos do not look at the student's credentials to see who they are or if they are "allowed" to view a certain video.  Embedded videos need to be set that anyone can view them and if you are using a system to limit this, it will not work.

You can link the video (literally paste in the link) but I realize that may not work in all situations and is not as clean as embedded videos.  

Maybe others know of a way to alter the embed code to look at the user's credentials but I have never seen a way.

We are somewhat whitelisting as teachers can click an "Approve" button to permit students to view the video. Where would the embedded video be set to allow anyone to view?

Hi @jason_waltz - How are your students accessing Canvas? Browser, mobile browser, or the Canvas Student app?

hi @jason_waltz - Thank you for the quick response! After collaborating with one of our L1 Support Agents, we think the best "next step" would be to open a case with Support. They'll be able to take a look at the page with the embed and be able to take a closer look. If what you learn would benefit others, please update this thread!

Appreciate the response but we already have an escalated beyond L1 case. I posted in the hopes that someone here may have prior knowledge to expedite a solution.

Hello @jason_waltz 

It looks like you have a case that has been escalated to the Level 2 support. 

Without being able to take a look at the specific example, It does sound a bit like it might be related to the whitlising or possibly a restricted administrative setting on the Chromebooks or the chrome Browser itself. Does it do this while in an incognito browser window also? 

If you wouldn't mind letting us know what they are able to find out on this, I would love to know.
