I graded an assignment

I posted the grades

There was a late assignment.

I graded that tone too.

All the grades became hidden, sending students into a panic.

This is ridiculous.

Posting and hiding grades has been a nightmare for so many people for years. Why can't it be just one single button instead of who-knows-how-many different setting each one buried deeper than the next. I mean, if Canvas designed a phone, would it be able to make phone calls? Or would I have to adjust six different settings first?

I'm guessing you used the hide grades option to hide your scores while grading rather than manual grade posting.

With hide grades, there is no option to hide individual grades, and it hides only grades that were previously posted. (So the new submission, may be the only one NOT hidden by your example, unless you had previously entered a zero as a grade.)

Manual grade posting, hides individual student scores as they submit. Then post grades (graded) can be used to post only those that have a score, allowing future submissions to be hidden automatically as they come in. For this to work, you cannot choose post - everyone, because that will "post" even empty cells. You also cannot enter zeros before you click post - graded, because that will post the zeros as graded. If you do not post zeros students will not see the impact of missing the assignment on their score, and once posted, the only way to hide scores is with the hide grades option. As a result there is limited use of manual posting for late submissions.
