[ARCHIVED] Going to Total Points FROM Weighted Grades

I am teaching a new-to-me course this fall. I copied a section of the course from a different instructor to use as a base for mine. That instructor used weighted grades, but I use a points system. I have edited the Assignments page to not use weighted grades, but the Groups the previous instructor created are still there. Additionally, when I create a new assignment, I am forced to add it to an existing assignment group or create a new one.

Am I just stuck using weighted grades and/or using the existing assignment groups, or is there a way around this?

Hi @Zooropa94 -

You should be able to remove those Assignment Groups and have a single group. If you create the group (or smaller selection of groups) you'd like to utilize, the assignments can be moved/consolidated. In this resource, if you scroll down to "delete group" there are some great diagrams that will show you how to bulk-move items in the group to another group in the course.

Thanks for the explanation. It sounds so simple, but when I create new groups, so I can start moving assignments to new groups, they are labeled 0% of Total. That does not seem right; I don't want weighting.

Is the 0% of Total label going to change my points grading in the gradebook?

It is very easy to turn off weighting for all assignment groups within your course.  On your "Assignments" index page, click on the three dots kebab icon just to the right of the "+ Assignment" button.  Then select "Assignment Groups Weight".  Remove the checkmark next to "Weight final grade based on assignment groups".  Then, click the "Save" button.  Essentially, it is the reverse of these steps:

Chris, still working on this. When I click the Kebab I do not see Assignment Groups Weight.

What I see is : Edit, Delete, Move Contents, Move Group. Commons Favorites.

I can click Edit and remove the percentage in the first box. But that seems to be all I can do. I get back to the 0% of Total again, which could be problematic?

You're not clicking on the correct three-dot kebab icon.  In my earlier post, I indicated that users need to click on the three-dot kebab icon just to the right of the "+ Assignments" button at the top right corner of the "Assignments" page.  The three-dot kebab icon that you're referring to in your post is located in the light gray bar where an assignment group name appears.  Please look at the illustration under the heading "Open Assignment Groups Weights Settings" in the Guide, How do I weight the final course grade based on as... - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com) for where this is located.  Hope this helps.
