I believe you can make an activity in a module required so that you cannot move on in the module before completing it. How do I do this?

You are correct, you can make specific content a requirement in Modules; you also can add prerequisites, so that specific modules don't open up until other modules are completed. This feature allows for work-flow to operate without direct interaction from the teacher, and is great for self-paced activities.
