The Instructure Community is fully available, including guides, release notes, forums, and groups. Some styling may still look unusual while we work with our platform provider on a fix.
How can I make it the case that students can see one anothers posts on a discussion forum? The discussion is enabled and visible, but not the subsections of it -- for some reason. Many thanks in advance! Best, Maureen

Hi, Maureen!
Did you happen to click this setting when you were posting the discussion?
Many of my teachers like this setting because it forces students to post their own thoughts before reading those of other students. That might be the case. Have students posted anything to the discussion yet?

Hello. I am looking for the apparent opposite.
I am looking for an option that allows students to create and edit their
replies but they can NOT see other students replies.
Does that feature exist in canvas, or should I have them send emails with answers????
Hi @JamesWaters,
If students are just answering a prompt, but not supposed to see each other's work, that really sounds more like an assignment than a discussion to me. Assignments can have multiple attempts, which is somewhat like editing but they'd need to copy their previous answer or re-upload a revised document for the revision.

Hi. Thank you for your reply.
I post a Question related to assignments given during the week.
Assignment example: identify computer components with their names (software program) drag and drop.
Discussion: Now that you did the assignment, post a reply to this question in your own words. What computer
components are on the system you are using now? 100 word minimum. It's an essay response to my question.
I do not want students to see each others answers (reply posts in a discussion question format allow students to see each others replies).
My goal is to keep the replies confidential between the student who posts a reply and the Instructor who grades it.
If I read you reply correctly, you are suggesting I change these discussion question replies to assignments?
Hi @JamesWaters,
Yes, from that description, it sounds like an assignment for sure! Discussions are really made to facilitate communication among everyone in the class (students, ta's, teachers, etc), and aren't really designed to be private. For things that are just between a teacher and student, assignments definitely seem more appropriate.

Thanks. I did. It is still a bit annoying though, because I wanted students to post comments before seeing the comments on what they posted (in this case a link to a presentation) of other students; what happened though is that the students have to provide a random reply even to be able to see the postings on the discussion forum at all. So apparently the only way to get this working (enabling students to see comments only after having commented themselves) is to ask students to each start a discussion on their own.
That's an idea, but couldn't you also leave that setting unmarked? That way, they could post their links to the presentation and could reply thoughtfully right away?
