The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
Below is an email I sent to my faculty reminding them about quiz security in Canvas. Quiz security is a big concern on our campus so I find it good to send reminders like this out at the beginning of the semester. What type of things to you remind faculty about at the beginning of the semester?

Re: Quiz Security in Canvas
Just a reminder to everyone about Quiz security in Canvas.
If you don't want students to be able to see what quiz questions they got right and which they got wrong then you have to UNCHECK the "Let Students See their Quiz Responses" box under quiz settings. Why? If the students know which question they got right then they know what the correct answer is OR if they got the question wrong then they know what answer isn't correct.
The only thing the "Let Students See the Correct Answers" checkbox does is show students ALL the correct answers for the quiz regardless of whether they got the answer correct or not.

Kona
We had to send a mass update out reminding everyone that they had to Publish their course before students would be able to see it.
Yep, we do that as well!
Here is my "Start of Semester Canvas Reminders" email (some of this is specific to our Institution):
Greetings Faculty,
We want to make sure you get your semester off to a successful start. Here are some useful Canvas reminders.
Finding your fall courses
Head on over to the Start of Semester Resources page and click on “Finding your new course shells” for information on finding your courses and adding them to your course drop-down menu.
Grades
Put zeroes in your grade book for any work students fail to complete. Canvas does not treat an ungraded assignment the same as one you have graded with a zero.
Attendance
If you choose to use the attendance feature in Canvas, know that by default it includes a graded assignment worth 100 points. You should adjust the point value of that assignment to whatever you deem appropriate for your course before taking attendance. More information here.
Files - By default, any files you upload to a course will be visible to students. Check out this guide on restricting access to files and folders.
Student View
Take advantage of Student View, a feature in Canvas that allows you to view your course as your students will see it. This is a great way to catch unpublished content and view the layout of your course from a student perspective. More information here.
Select Specific Content
If you had announcements or calendar events in the course you are importing from, use “Select Specific Content” when importing and do not check “Calendar Events” or “Announcements.” More information here.
Syllabus Statements and Required Footer
If you have the old “required footer” on your homepage or an older version of the syllabus statements in your syllabus, you are encouraged to remove them. They may contain out of date information. More information here.
If you have any questions, concerns, or would like assistance with Canvas or other instructional technology, please let us know and we will be happy to help! We can be reached by phone at 928-226-4368 or in person in room #458 on the Lone Tree campus Monday through Friday. You may also email us at eLearning@coconino.edu.
Have a great semester!
This is great! Thanks for sharing awilliams!
I created a semester checklist document of all the things instructors should do to prepare for the upcoming semester. I update it every semester with anything that has changed. Here is the message I just sent them. I usually have to sent out several messages about publishing courses after the semester starts. :smileyconfused:
This was the first semester where we have TurnItIn Integrated so I have been messaging about this non-stop for the past month.
Hello All
Fall Canvas courses will not be available to students until Tuesday, August 25. If your course is NOT published on Tuesday, August 25, students will NOT be able to access it until you publish the course. Please be sure to have content ready and published for the first day of the semester so students have a stress free start for the semester. Below are some helpful tips and resources to help you get started on your preparations. If you need further assistance, please call me at 234-5571 to schedule an appointment.
