[ARCHIVED] Require a webcam

I have started to create an exam. After making my initial save, I review the exam characteristics:

   Shuffle Answers      Yes
   Time Limit               30 Minutes
   Multiple Attempts   No

   ...

   Webcam Required   No

   ...

I could find no procedure to "require a webcam" - how do I do this?

Hi,  @feildwb ‌, I have never encountered this before, but the first thing that comes to mind is Respondus. Is the quiz set to require the Respondus Lockdown Browser and is your school using Respondus Monitor (which does require a webcam)? If not, it sounds like an external proctoring application your school is using. Please let us know more about where you've created the quiz and what tools the school might offer to administer it. Thanks.

Thank you for your reply.

No, my school is not using/requiring Respondus.

However, we are using HonorLock. And this is part of the reason for the question. I gave a quiz last week and thought all was good. By using HonorLock (and its Webcam Failsafe option turned off) I thought this would require all students to have their webcam on and operating. And for most students that worked.

However, several students had issues with their webcam and no recording was made (within HonorLock) via their webcam, despite the Webcam Failsafe option turned off. HonorLock is exploring what went wrong, but in the mean time I have another exam.

So, in preparing this next exam, I noticed the "characteristics" I mention in my original question. And I could not find a way to require this. I reviewed the previous exam (that had issues) and it was to work with HonorLock, but that characteristic still we set to "Webcam required NO" - even with HonorLock on.

I am fairly new to all this and this next exam is the Final Exam and I do not want any issues with webcams not working, so I want to be sure I have done what I need to do to require them.

Sorry for the long explanation, but I thought it would help.

 @feildwb ‌, thanks for the explanation: so it is related to proctoring software—not Respondus Monitor, but HonorLock. I'm hopeful that someone with experience using HonorLock in their courses can assist you with this. My search through the FIU website found this page of resources for instructors, and I have also shared the question with someone from your school.

I will move forward under the assumption that this characteristic/problem is related to HonorLock.

However, in my current exam I have not yet linked HonorLock into the exam and there is nothing on the display that indicates that "Webcam Required NO" has anything to do with HonorLock; instead it looks like a Canvas option.

How can I be sure it is NOT a Canvas option?

 @feildwb , I can say with high certainty that it's not a native Canvas option, but might be something that displays in the quiz settings when HonorLock is enabled for a course or account. Canvas Support could tell you more.

Howdy  @feildwb ‌,

Hope all is well. We use Honorlock frequently at my institution (FIU).

After you click on Honorlock in your course navigation menu and after you select "enable" next to the exam you want to use Honorlock, the options that you see are dependent on what your admin has allowed you to see. Below is an example of what I see, but yours may look different.

To enable (or disable) a selection, you just click on it (or if yours looks like toggle on/off- just slide it so you see a color, maybe green?).

You'll notice I have a padlock on "Manual Review" that means my admins have locked it in the off setting. [Normally our university sets this option so we can choose, but because our university is paying for some proctored exams this semester for remote learning- they have disabled it].

You can always click on the chat bubble in the bottom right corner, to connect to an Honorlock rep for assistance. Also, if you don't see "Record Webcam"- talk to your institution admins/tech support.

Pardon me. I understand what you are talking about now.

I believe that summary statement (which is part of Canvas) is related to Respondus Lockdown Browser settings. Since you are not using RLDB, then it will say "Webcam Required NO." The students do not see this statement.

As long as you have selected "Record Webcam" in the Honorlock settings, you're good.
