The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
When using a rubric it used to populate the score from the rubric once complete into speedgrader.. Now this functionality is not working on existing rubrics. It is only working on new rubrics. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Did you confirm that the checkbox in the Rubric is selected that says "Use for Grading"?

This is so important and yet desperately needs a video or a straight to the point solution.
I have an assignment created.
Students have turned in work.
I want to use a rubric that will calculate the points and populate the score box.
Why must I re-create the rubric for each new assignment of the same type?
Why can't the rubric be preset upon to calculate the points and populate the score box anytime I apply it to any assignment?
I agree. It's September 2021, is there no solution to this issue yet?
Hi @chris_vegter ~ One additional question for you! Are you using Speedgrader on a browser, or are you using rubrics in the new Canvas Teacher app?
Thanks everyone on this.. I am not sure how or why it was unchecked, but it used to work, and works once again once I rechecked the box.
Strange..
I am using the Canvas Teacher App on an iPad Pro. The "use this rubric for grading" box is checked, but on the Canvas Teacher app, the app does not add up the points that I enter. For example, a student earned 138 total points but it entered 148. I do not know why it added to 148. I could over-ride and put in 138 by hand. Still- very annoying.
Using the web site via my college, the rubric addition appears to be functioning normally, so there seems to be something wrong with the Canvas teacher app specifically.
I am posting this reply on February 11, 2018.
Please advise.
Thanks.
Hello @plostroh . I don't know the answer to your question but reading through the problem you describe and this thread, it may be worth creating a new question for your post. The original question is marked as answered and doesn't appear to be related to the Teacher App specifically. Your question would probably be seen by more individuals if it were a separate question itself.
If you submit this as a new question, you might consider joining the https://community.canvaslms.com/groups/cmug?sr=search&searchId=e717db0b-5381-4bd1-a290-dd7aaa2e1fa8&... group, if you have not already done so, and sharing your question with this group as well. The share button in the Community is in the upper right-hand side of the screen.
Best wishes!
Hi @plostroh ,
This is interesting. So if I follow you, the app IS adding up the points, but not doing it correctly? I've never heard of that before, if that's the case. I have only seen the app not add up the points because the use this rubric for grading wasn't checked online, but not do it incorrectly.
Is this happening across all assignments, or just this one? If it's just this one, maybe you can create a test assignment and see it it happens again.
Sorry for giving you more questions than answers, but trying to find the root of the problem. Thanks!
Same problem here. Check the "use this rubric for grading" box. Use the Canvas Teacher App on an iPad Pro for grading. It shows the points added up but the total score is not saved. It is over three years after @plostroh posted the bug! Canvas definitely has too many "Community Coaches" but too few actual programmers to fix its pathetic software.
@lucas_uwl ...
Rubrics attached to quizzes do not work the same as you'd expect compared to when rubrics are attached to assignments (where you tell the assignment to use it for assignment grading). In fact, even if you attach a rubric to a quiz, the score a student receives will be calculated from the actual questions on the quiz ... and not the rubric. There is no "connection" between the quiz score and the rubric score. This is clearly indicated in the first bulleted item in the light blue box at the top of this Guide:
How do I add a rubric to a quiz?
In my former role as a Canvas admin in higher education, I sometimes saw where instructors had a quiz (let's say it's 50 points total ... 25 questions at 2 points each) but then they also wanted a rubric attached. However, the rubric only had a few criteria ... and it did not match the 50 points for the quiz. It might have had five criteria and the highest score for each one was 2 points each .. for a total of 10 points. So, you can see where in this situation, the total points for the quiz are completely different than the total points for the rubric.
Sorry I don't have better news for you, but I hope this helps to answer your question.
Hi @lucas_uwl,
Unfortunately, as mentioned in the How do I add a rubric to a quiz? - Instructure Community guide, "You cannot use a rubric for grading in quizzes, since quiz scores are calculated based on the number of points assigned to each quiz question." So while you can attach a rubric to a quiz, you'd have to manually put the points over into specific quiz questions due to the way quiz grading works in general.
I apologize in advance, as this probably isn't the answer you were hoping to get, but I hope it at least clarifies that you're not missing any settings or anything.
-Chris
Rubric points stopped populating to the speedgrader. I am using the SAME rubric for all my DQs. DQ1 graded last week populated into the speedgrader. Today, DQ2, using the same rubric does not. I can't edit it as it says it is in use in multiple places so yes, it is the exact same rubric that worked last week. 7/16/2023.
