[ARCHIVED] Securing Quizes on Chromebooks

If your school uses Chrombooks for students how are you provided a secure testing experience on the Chromebook with Canvas? I know Respondus does not work on Chromebooks and I am not having any luck finding anything that seems will work. Our teachers really need this feature.

You could also implement a third-party solution like Canvas Premier Partner - ProctorU​. I believe their proctoring solution will work with Chromebooks provided they have webcams.

This looks really great - but I am not sure this will work with High School students.  I am not so sure my parents would be ok with someone watching their student through the camera.  Also - I do not know if they would have all the necessary information for the verification.  None the less though - I really like it - just not sure if it would work for my school.

Another option may be to use screen-recording software and/or a proctored environment where the proctor can see all the screens. I've never been in a Chromebook environment or had access to the ChromeOS admin console, but there may also be logging features that could be used to verify no external sites were accessed while the test was being taken.

Go Guardian is another tool that is not a camera, but it records all activity on the Chromebook.   You can tell if another website was accessed, words put into search, etc.   A teacher can monitor real time, or come back later if there is a question.    LanSchool is apparently included with Lenovo Chromebooks.  We are currently testing Dell, Lenovo, and Acer Chromebooks.

Hapara is a robust solution giving visibility to their screens.  We do not use the ChromeOS platform, but many schools who do have this in place for their teachers.  http://hapara.com/solution/

My district is looking into LanSchool. We use it on our Mac & PC desktops, and have played around with the Chromebook version. We are currently piloting it in an elementary school, middle school, and high school. When exploring it, it gave the option to limit the websites students could visit (to limit students to just your quiz, use the quiz URL up to the quiz number but not beyond it, as the first page on the quiz and the page that appears once you hit "Start Quiz" have different URLs--see below for an example of what to use), you can direct students to a particular site; you can freeze computers with a message to look up to the board; you can share teacher and student screens, etc.

Our district is also looking into LANSchool because we get a free license with every Lenovo chromebook that we purchase. We haven't gotten very far yet though. I did create a simple Kiosk app that opens Canvas with no address bar. Then they are at least limited to being stuck in Canvas. I think they can still click on links to outside websites from within a course but it's better than nothing.

 @MattHanes  Just explored the Kiosk app—thanks! Do you have to enable it on each student computer by hand when it’s time for a quiz? Also, when setting up, it had me put in a username and password, but it didn’t prompt me for this when I hit Esc and then Quit Kiosk. Am I forgetting to check a box?

We just have it available for all users all the time. So when it's time to take a quiz, the teacher has them sign out and click on the kiosk app at the bottom of the screen instead of logging in. That was pushed down to all Chromebooks from our admin console. We disabled the ability to quit the app, I don't remember which setting that was though. I created the kiosk app a long time ago and I don't remember exactly what options I chose. I do remember that the only way to exit the kiosk app is to turn the laptop off. Hope that helps!

Most definitely! Sounds like how we have the Chromebooks set up for our statewide standardized test. Great idea--we might have to look into this if our IT department doesn't go for LanSchool. Thanks!
