Is there the ability to sync my canvas calendar to my iCloud or Outlook calendar? That would me extremely helpful for keeping track of assignments. It's very tedious inserting them individually.

Yes, it is possible to subscribe to your Canvas Calendar such that it shows within another application such at Outlook, iCloud or Google Calendar.  I've put a few relevant links below to show you how.  They say "as an instructor" but the instructions are the same for a student (you didn't specific if you were an instructor or student).

It does appear as that works for my school calendar (like to add school wide events, Add/drop date, thanksgiving break, etc.) but it does not populate my class calenders. Any ideas on that?

We've got a Calendar Sync service that's available which will allow users to have their Canvas calendars synchronised to their Outlook calendar. This results in each Canvas calendar becoming a Calendar in Outlook and is done in the background so the Calendars appear on all devices connected to your account (desktop, web or mobile).
