What's the best way to use Canvas Data? Our CSM has been talking to us about this, and it seems like a great source of information, but as it feels like drinking from a firehose we're concerned about actually getting use from it. I'm willing to read any info you wish to add, but some prompts are: Are you using any 3rd party analytics tools? What people are you sharing data with? What data are you specifically looking at?
Thanks for any info you have.
Hmm, good questions! I'd love to know more how people are using Canvas Data as well!
I think it depends on how Canvas Data can help you answer a question you have or augment some kind of early-warning system that you might be using. It's useful to have a guiding question so that we focus only on gathering what we need.
We are particularly interested in whether we can use Canvas Data to identify students who may not be engaged in their courses early in the semester. We are trying to determine how to find students who have not submitted their assignments on time or who are not accessing important resources. There are lots of nuances in Canvas Data so the overall goal is to find queries that work across hundreds of courses--and we are just beginning to do this.
Sam,
I just ran across this post that you put up last year. Since last May, have you identified any more data points in Canvas that you use on student engagement? I'm just now starting to explore this. I like your idea above about looking at which students have submitted assignments on time. I'd also like to look at message length, page views, and numbers of entries into Canvas. I need to keep looking around the Canvas Community for more information on this. Feel free to point me in the right direction if you know of anything. Thanks!
Hi Jeff,
We are still new at this, but there has been some work with the Canvas LMS before that you can look up. I recommend looking up the work of people like Mimi Recker and Andrew Walker, who have studied activity in Canvas more extensively.

Sam,
That article you sent me is great! Thanks so much. If anyone else out there reads this, the article demonstrates a great study conducted using Canvas data.
Jeff
Hi,
In our university network It is especially important to download the course analytics, and also student analytics. Some statisticians need further studies on these data, but not being downloadable present problems and therefore the decisions that the institution must take against the development of courses and students is limited.
I think downloading any kind of statistical data will be of great help.
Thank so much.
Andrea
