Is it possible to autoplay and/or loop a video using a function in canvas or html?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @lumleysm ...
I guess it may depend on where the video is coming from. If it was a video on YouTube, for example, I was searching the Internet to see if I could find any code, and I did find a snippet that you could add to the embed code to autoplay a video, but the suggestions for looping weren't working when I tried them in my own Canvas environment. I tried looking for autoplay and looping options in YouTube videos, but I wasn't able to find anything (unless someone else knows where they might be).
Vimeo, on the other hand, has options of autoplay and looping available when you harvest the embed code...so that's pretty handy.
If you could let us know where the source of your video lives, that would be helpful. Thanks!
Thanks to Covid-19 and the move to remote learning, I was looking for an answer to this exact question. I found a youtube video that walked me though how to embed and autoplay a video into a Canvas assignment for my 6th graders, and lo and behold, it worked. The link is: https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+autoplay+a+youtube+video+in+html&oq=how+to+autoplay+a+youtube...

Hi @lumleysm , I found a potential solution using YouTube and Google Slides. It's inelegant but might meet your needs. I initially posted the steps here but they were long enough so I changed them to a blog post:
I tried the link, but it didn't work.

Hello! I came across this thread while looking for a way to autoplay videos stored in Studio rather than on YouTube. Does anyone know if the code snippets would be the same except they would point to a different source location?
Or does anyone have a solution for videos stored in Canvas Studio?
TIA
AnneD
I just tried using the autoplay=1 in the video iframe but it didn't autoplay. Also tried included mute=1 to get around browser blocking of auto-playing videos with sound. Has anybody managed to get this to work? I know it is not a browser issue as I can get the same video playing in an iframe window, not on canvas.
I'm finding that videos from YouTube have autoplay and mute functionality restrictions and limitations in Chrome. I haven't tested many browsers but I'm seeing that generally the restrictions on the modern browsers are to be mindful of UX concerns (especially audio). I can appreciate the desire to autoplay, but from both accessibility and UX concerns this seems to be the trend. There is a bit of discussion around topics like distractions, unexpected page content behaviors, and from what I've read also decreased engagement to consider (not to mention data consumption, battery drain, and even loss of trust if website users feel that their preferences and autonomy are being overridden).
