What is the difference between a Google Assignment and a Google Docs Cloud Assignment?

I'm not sure where you see the reference to Google Assignment. Are you referring to:

Those are both external tools that can be added by the instructor (if the permissions allow) or the Canvas Administrator. The names are picked by the person who installed them, so hopefully they pick good names. I could, theoretically, take the GeoGebra tool and call it Google and Canvas wouldn't care.

Given that, I'm going to go off the description.

The first one is a Canvas integration that allows you to use Google Cloud assignments within Canvas -- Shar linked to resources about those.

The second one is actually a Google Product as part of their Education package. Assignments | Google for Education

You are correct in your assumption. I teach math and have used both these

products and want to confirm the following:

Google Assignment

used through the External Tool option in creating an assignment through

CANVAS, students click on the assignment, it creates a document for them,

they "do it" and submit it in CANVAS, CANVAS locks it, teacher grades/gives

feedback by going to the assignment and clicking on one of the assignments

turned in and comments/grades, then return. Wow! this takes a while for

each one, so I just return them all together and go get a cup of coffee.

Students can then open it, work on it and resubmit. I can grade and return.

Is this correct?

Google Cloud Assignment

used through the External Tool option in creating an assignment through

they "do it", it becomes a "living" document, I can comment (grade)/ give

feedback on it and they can respond. When/how are students alerted to

changes in the document. Is this correct?

For both, it is annoying that I do not get an icon in CANVAS that an

assignment was submitted. It is a real efficiency distractor.

What I want is to launch a Google doc assignment, see when they submit,

comment, then they make corrections as a living document, but want it open

so that they can continue to improve without my interference or holding

them back. Combo of both above.

I'm not a specialist.  I'm just a teacher like you.  I'm wondering if you can set your notifications to let you know when someone submits. You can submit immediate or one daily digest if you will have a lot.
