If you haven't already, here's a good read: Six Trajectories for Digital Technology in Higher Education (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu
The section on how mobile devices is especially good. I really liked the statement, "Many are moving to a mobile-first approach." Part of what excites me about Bridge is it is a mobile-first approach. Based on discussions at InstructureCon, those learning moments from Bridge will find their way into Canvas. It's an exciting time to be working in this space.
I agree. If you are serious about online learning, you need to be serious about mobile. Students are using it!
A little self promotion, but my article is in this EDUCAUSE Review as well:
Including the following:
When asked about the use of UCF-specific apps, 65 percent of students said they use Webcourses@UCF-Canvas (the mobile app for our learning management system), and 55 percent said they use UCFMobile. Most said they use the UCF's mobile apps on-the-go for informal information. Their preference is to use desktop computers and/or laptops for submission of assignments, assessments, and formal UCF communications.
This is a great article - thanks for sharing. My 13 year old daughter has an early version of an iPod. Despite its limitations, that has become her third hand. She is very creative in the ways that she finds to use it, including for school. Observing her and the students at work frequently reminds me of the need to better integrate these devices into our teaching to improve their education.
Awesome - great info!
It’s amazing that 95% of the respondents own a smartphone device. I will definitely share this with our faculty as I don’t think some realize how many of their students are using smartphones.
Thanks Ryan
This was a great article with some really interesting data. I found it especially interesting seeing the increase in student's requests NOT to use mobile apps increased due to a lack of technical support. The instructor's at our institution don't want to have to provide support to their students as much as sending the student someplace for the help with their devices/apps. We are really pushing for an instructor to USE the technology and try out what they want students to use in their courses.
