That error message means that the student had already made a submission to a quiz set for one attempt (or submitted for all possible attempts). Many students do not understand that just peeking at a quiz is counted as an attempt. They looked, they exited, Canvas submitted after allotted time limit.

I remind my students in several places that "peeking" counts.

One other thing I have noted is that sometimes when the quiz is set to display one question at a time, students will hit the "Submit" button after their first question; thereby creating the problem above - this seems to happen more on phones since the "Next" and "Submit" buttons are so close.. I believe students have been given this error with unlimited attempts and they’re only getting this error on their phones.

Okay, two more questions, and I apologize as I know you were hoping for a simple answer and this is hard to diagnoses remotely........................

Are they using the Canvas Student App, or are they access via a browser? The app works very well with Quizzes, but I never recommend using phones for quizzes; recognizing, though, that many students have no choice.

I'm not sure since I'm a distance teacher and they students are running into hiccups in Houston. I can pass along the suggestion that they download the app if they haven't already.

Have you tried contacting your Canvas Admin/Support department for your school? On the admin side you can view what browser was used, and I believe there is an entry for the app, but I could not quickly find an example.

I would tell your students...............

• Use the app if they feel comfortable with it, and trust their WiFi connections, or
• Make sure they are using a current browser.

My Houston AT told me they are using the app.... if they look at a quiz and get out it counts it as a submission? I know it saves where they were at on the computer.

Yes, it saves where students were when they exit and will let them resume, but only up to the allotted time you set for the attempts. So if you set a 60 minute time limit on a quiz, your students exit after 10 minutes and do not return for an hour, Canvas will submit at the 60 minute mark.

Canvas does not let them resume with 50 minutes left on the timer - that timer does not quit running until the student submits or the time runs out regardless of whether the students exited the quiz or not..

This is likely the source of the issue.

Okay, so I don't have time limits set up for any of my quizzes or tests. I looked at the student, Jazmin Ortiz's Canvas account. According to the computer, she hasn't submitted her midterm but her app won't let her take it.

Any other thoughts on what the problem could be?
