So, another issue from my online class.
I have created groups in the class, with students assigned automatically. I discovered, however, that students who joined the class after the groups were created (during the drop/add week) were not placed in groups -- so they were able to do their discussion postings in the "root" discussion page (where the prompt is). Is this a bug or a feature? I would think that lots of schools allow students to add classes after the class has started, so Canvas should automatically place new students in groups.

I have an instructor with the same question. For a smaller class, it is fairly easy to notice late-adding students. For a larger one (hers has 700+ students), that isn't so easy.
frankel, as far as I'm aware this is considered to be the way things function in Canvas. To me it's a bug, but that's more of my preference of what I wish would happen when someone hasn't been added to a specific group. It's also why we recommend that faculty not create their groups until after the last "add" time has passed.
Well, I'll have to think about making another feature request.
In my online class, I can't wait until the end of the first week, as students have to begin working in groups from day 1.
I have gone ahead and made this a feature request. Hopefully, it will reach the voting stage.
I see that the feature request died in the voting stage during the Spring of 2016. It needed 100 votes in three months, which it did not get. If anyone wants to resubmit the feature request, I would want to vote for it.
